Removing experience points/exp awards

Halarid

First time out of the vault
This is my first playthrough of Fallout 2 (I recently completed Fallout 1) and I have this special style of playing..

Bascially, I dislike any endless resources - be it experience or gold. Random encounters is one of them. Now, I can force myself to only combat a certain number of random encounters and then flee from them from that point on. But I can't stop the outdoorsman skill, an useful skill for avoiding encounters, from giving me xp whenever I travel around.

a) Can I manually remove xp every time I get awarded with some xp? If yes, how?

b) Can I add a script to the Fallout 2 folder that stops the outdoorsman/first aid/doctor skill giving xp for usage? How?

Thanks.

There are Fallout save editors that will allow you to change experience points, inventory carried, skill points, and SPECIAL abilities. There is a link at the top of the Forums page called "Files", check it out. Here are a couple of direct links to utilities/editors for both games.

Some actual modders could probably explain how to modify the game as you requested.

Now that I've done my good deed for the day, I have a question about your special style of playing. Without experience, your character doesn't level up and skills do not increase. Are you nuts? Oh well, it's your game.

Heh, no.. I don't play without XP. :D I said I don't want to earn (too much) xp from *endless* sources of xp, i.e. random encounters, using the doctor skill etc.

Sources of xp which are not endless - quest xp, hand placed enemies (enemies in places other than the random encounter areas)..

So I'll need to modify the xp pretty often. Is a trainer the best tool to do it? Which is a good one that can remove xp easily?

Oh, and if I remove xp from my main character, does it also remove xp from my party members?

I think it would be better and make more sense, if every encounter (especially human encounters) will be limited to an amount of x. This way the item farming will also be limited.

Hm.. yeah, I thought about that, but that way I would make the game easier because there would be no risk from some difficult encounters in certain areas I suppose.

Currently I just leave the encounter if I already defeated the same type of encounter (for example, 6 bandits). The thing is, I noticed it in Fallout 1 on higher levels, that party members will kill an enemy before I even reach the area transition. And the outdoorsman skill which I cannot stop..
