I like Fallout2 more than any other PC game I have played in years, so I thought that a Fallout discussion forum might be a good place to learn about other games I might enjoy. I will need to tell you a bit about myself so you will understand what I am looking for, so please indulge me. To begin with, I am seriously old. I started gaming back in the 1960s, and I have played just about every boardgame the late and deeply lamented Avalon Hill ever produced. I also played Napoleonic miniatures for a while. I was there for the birth of RPGs, when graph paper was a basic requirement. I say all this to explain that for me--an ancient boardgamer--gaming is all about thinking, not hand-eye coordination. No real-time, first-person shooters, thank you very much. I want my gaming experience to be relaxing, not stressful. I don't get very excited about graphics or sound, either. Just as Fallout2 is my favorite RPG, Age of Empires is my favorite strategy title. I love its replayability. I think these two games are the only ones I would buy again. I am really tired of spending money on games that sound good in reviews, but are in fact just inane. I am not a computer jock, so I don't want anything that's a problem to install/run. Of course, I am planning to buy Fallout1 as soon as I can find a copy, and I like the sound of Arcanum. What else have y'all played that you would recommend to a borderline elderly female gamer?

Well, in my opinion Fallout 1 is even better that Fallout 2, with less bugs, so it'll be easier to run. If I were you, I'd make for the closest store and get yourself a copy. You'll probably find Fallout 1 only in a bundle with Fallout 2, but at such rediculously low prices it doesn't really matter. If you like strategy I can also recommend Starcraft, wich has beside good strategy gaming also a good story in it, although there's only 1 way to finish it, but it's a strategy game, so what the heck ? While you're at it, also buy the broodwar expansion set, wich is very good in my opinion. Enough ?

Definately buy Fallout 1.
Definately buy Arcanum (made by much the same people that made Fallout)

I've also heard that 'Planescape: Torment' is good. Although I can't vouch for it myself. Apparently it has a lot if dialogue and a rich, dark storyline.

Apart from that... I can't say I've heard of much else in the way of decent RPGs... Unless you want to go back to some real classics....

Moo..... Moo.... I'm an Interplay Cow. (Ready to be milked with a Fallout style MMORPG with aliens!)

I know many would disagree; but you can check out the BG series, and PST. They are very good crpgs - better than most games on the market.

This one is a bit old so it might be hard to get it but i enjoyed Betrayal at Antarra. It's from Sierra so that might help.

Only problem with the BG series and PST is that they are real time. OK pausable but still. She said she didn't want real time stuff.

First of all let me welcome the first woman to enter this board in a ..... while.
As for age .. ok i was not there in the 60 but i got here in the early 70's.
If you started playing a long time ago sometimes i find it good to go back to those games.
Games like Wasteland or Questron II wich came out in the 80's. btw Wasteland is the mother of Fallout. These game are low tech and takes about 64K but could take you a month to finish (at reasonnable playing time if you never played them).

As for sims i just started replaying Theme Hospital (wich was bundle with about all the sims they ever made for 20$ CAN).

On recent games: Fallout 1 is a must, Arcannum is not out of the box yet(sorry guys did not have time) but from what i've played on the demo it's excellent.

btw i still have those D&D graph paper at my house along with some of the char. i played with, stored away in a box in my house.

Oops, I missed that part. Sorry. Yeah, I gues even with the pause; she might want to avoid it. Though, if she has time, she might give them a chance. It might not give the Fallout options; but offers things that FO doesn't like deeper npcs.

goto www.adom.de and download the latest version of adom (its quite the amazing rpg once you get into it)

URW(unrealworlds) is also a good rpg. (i think you have to order it off the internet though)

hmm thats all i can think of, kinda busy at the moment sorry =]

I want to thank all of you for your replies. I was particularly interested that you mentioned Wasteland, Ugly John. That was a special favorite of mine on my old Commodore 64. In fact, the reason I impulsively bought Fallout 2 was that the blurb on the box reminded me of Wasteland. At the time, I had no idea that some of the same developers had worked on both games. I have been reflecting on why many of the recent computer games are such a disappointment to me, and I believe a lot of it is just a nostalgia problem. There is just no way to recapture the thrill of playing those first generation games. Do any of you remember the original "Reach for the Stars" or "Empire?" Those games had zero bells and whistles, but I can remember playing them for hours and hours without stopping to eat or sleep. I would only quit when my hands cramped up on the keyboard. I guess the games themselves weren't that great, but the computer gaming process itself was just so incredible. I had been an avid boardgamer for years when the first PCs appeared. Boardgaming was always such a hassle. You had to get a group together, find a place to meet, keep explaining the rules to the logically challenged, and then--just when the game was reaching an exciting conclusion--someone always had to leave early. If you were playing a fairly complex game with 5 or 6 others, you were lucky to play two turns an hour. Can you imagine how it felt to play those first computer games? The sheer joy of playing a game all alone at 2:00am without having to wait for some braindead opponent to stack up a gazillion cardboard counters (anyone out there ever play "Squad Leader?") was a joy unmatched. I guess I can understand why PCs meant the death of boardgaming. Pardon my digression. I want to assure all of you who replied that I will be acting on your suggestions. I think "No Mutants Allowed" is just an excellent board. I have lurked on several other gaming boards, but never felt inclined to post to any of the others. NMA maintains a classy, well-informed tone that is simply admirable. Thanks again.

There aren't very many good RPGs on PC in North America for the 90s. You got exceptions like FO, but games like that are quite rare. I am a fairly old gamer myself, so I know how you may feel. I started playing RPG the old fashioned way. Actually that is why I got into video games, all those beautiful worlds right at your finger tips. But, sometimes there is nothing like a good P&P game, as long as you got a great GM.

Anyway, enough of the good old days, these are my suggestions:

Civilization III (Great game, wonder why nobody mention it)9.5/10

SMAC, or Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri(wonderful game, the interface feels slightly like a board game)9.4/10

Black & White (it's actually considered a sub-genre of RPG, playing an all seeing deity)8.7/10

Heros of Might and Magic III/IV, VII/VIII (There are two style of this series, one is pure RPG(VII, VIII), one is more strategy(III/IV), so take your pick. I like them both a lot.)8.6/10, 8.1/10

D (it's one of my favorite game of all time, but it was a cult hit, so it may take some doing to find one. The game was so scary that one of my friend couldn't sleep alone for a week.) 9.0/10(I am biased.):)

Age of Empires (I consider this series to be more interesting than Starcraft, because there are more things to do. But check it out see if you like it.)8.6/10

Ultima Collection 1-8 (It's cheap. $15. It's a great classic. And it should bring back those warm and fuzzy feeling you are looking for.:))

Daggerfall (Another great classic, the game came out when no company dare to make an RPG. It's open ended, so you can do pretty much what you want like in FO. It also has a reputation system similar to that of FO. It's a lot of fun if you don't mind the first person view.) 9.2/10

Vampire: The Masquerade (It's a game based on a P&P rpg of the same name. There are too many bugs for me to recommend it as a single player game, but the editor in there is so good that I felt it's necessary to mention it. Basically you can create a P&P game on the fly with all the places, characters, and all the objects alread animated. All you need is to write a good script for it and you are set. There is a huge online community for the human directed M-players games. If you decide to get it, please get it patched as soon as you get it.) 7.2/10

System Shock 2 (I haven't played it yet, but I heard from personal friends that it's good. It's one of the few sci-fi rpgs, and it has also gone gold, meaning it's $15 or less. Give it a shot.) 8.5(Gamespot's score)

These are all I can remember off the top of my scrambled head, so I'll try digging up some slepper hits which were good but nobody noticed.

Enjoy! :D

I have to agree on the Alpha Centaui (w/ Alien Crossfire thrown in for good measure). As for Civ 3, I haven't played it yet (I play Civ 2 all day at work), but an ex-coworker told me Civ 3 is pretty good.

I can't believe a forgot Leuisure suit Larry.

It's not a fps, you can take your time, the game is so dumb that's it's funny. And it's a classic.
As you can see i'm more into classics than new games. Legion is pretty good too, it's kinda like ages of empires but lighter and more low-tech.

Oh, yeah, who could forget! The oh so amusing Lesiure Suit Larry series. :D I actually bought the collector's edition. It has all 1-7 in the series and a strip poker game. You may want to watch the older games though, because 1-4 didn't work very well on my old Win95 machine, maybe it's time to dust off some old 386s. :)

Oh, oh, stupid computer joke flash! How do you multi-task with a 286?

Well, since it takes at least 20mins to boot up, you can go brew a coffee and read the days paper while you are at it. :D

anybody remember playing a wild west game for your commadore 64's?

i cant quite remember what it is called but whenever i went to my cousins i used to play it, the whole game was basically dialog, and the townspeople came up and talked to you, and the point of the game was to "draw" your weapons before the bad guys did, and not to shoot the good guys ;) oh so much fun =]

First off, I gotta say one thing... NEVER, EVER play a sequel first... If your going to play Fallout, make sure you play WL,FO,FO2 in that order.. otherwise the continuity is ruined...

The Ultima Series is good, all 11 games are worthwhile, but getting to grips with ultima 1-5 can be tiresome (until you really get drawn into it), Ultima 7 is probably the best of the standard 9 Ultima games, as it has the best party controll and a strong story. If you cant find where to buy Ultima from, you can probably download it from somwhere in a slightly less-than-legal fashion, but I doubt anyone will mind...

The Baulders Gate series is also a good choice, but I always found that it had minimal replayability, which is one of the things I value most about Fallout... but good for a few dozen hours atleast.

If your tastes vary at all from RPGs, then for strategy games, I recomend both Starcraft and SM-Alpha Centauri as some of the best and Homeworld as my all time favourite (and most graphically pleasing) of all non-rpg games. Another graphically fantastic game would be Unreal Tournament, which is great, and replayable, but can be dull as hell if your too good (or bad) at first person games...

As the guy above said, Lesure Suit Larry is a funny and entertaining game, but is better after a few beers and with some mates round...
