Restoring saved games after system reinstalled

Help--I just did a clean install of Windows ME to my reformatted C drive. Before doing that I saved the entire "Fallout2" folder to my D drive. Now I (i) installed Fallout 2 and ran the patch, then (ii) replaced the entire Fallout2 "data" folder with the saved folder from D, and also the Worldmap data file.

Problem--when I click "Load Game" it lists all my old saves, but when I try to load any saved game I get a Kernel32.dll error. I can start a "New Game" just fine so it seems Fallout2 is compatible with Windows ME. What do I need to do to properly restore my old saved games??

Sounds to me like you've done everything right. Maybe it's a problem with Windows ME. It could be that saves made with win9x don't work with WinME. Nah... that sounds pretty farfetched... But it's Microsoft, so you never know :-)

It's Not Just The OS

I'm running Windows Me also. I only changed the install size and had the same thing happen to me. I even tried them on a Win95 machine I have and Fallout 2 "performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". If I start a new game, save, and reload I'm fine. I really hope someone has a way to fix this, because my brother was over halfway through the game and I feel pretty bad about screwing him up even though I had no idea this would happen.

If Anyone Wants to Try Replacing Kernel32.dll...

You can find it in Win_10.cab on the Windows Me cd. I don't have mine with me right now so if you want give it a try getloose please do so by all means. I doubt it will do anything, I'm not having any other problems with my system, but what do you have to loose?

Fixed!!

I figured out what my problem was, maybe it's yours too. Make sure the SAVEGAME folder is in the Data folder and not in the main Fallout dir. For some reason it will still "see" the saves if they're in the wrong place, but go to load them and blammo. I found this out when I was trying to fix them with an editor and they weren't showing up. Hope this helps you.
