First time out of the vault
so i was playing fallout 3 and the vault didn't make sense and it's lazy concept they needed a geck+super muatnts origin+fev+inhuman experiments= a vault!
This just makes more question why did the military give vault tec the fev to use it when they have mariposa and scientists to work on it and see the results and write it it's also retcon west tech holodisk that said all the fev experiments converted to mariposa
so i will rewrite my version of the vault more sense

Vault 87

Vault 87 sealed the door from inside on 23 october 2077 and the 1500 residents are locked from the outside world with labs that have the latest genetic engineering technology with a big dna map for a large number of creatures

On 20 february 2085 the canned food ran out and the corps from hydro-agricultural farms wasn’t enough to fulfill the needs of the vault dwellers without mentioning nutrient depletion

The door is open on 08 may 2085 before the supposed date it refuses all console commands and radiation leaks into the vault affecting the residents with sickness

The overseer advertises the solution for the radiation problem by improving genetic repair mechanisms in dna with cellular protection by producing proteins that shield cells from oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals by genetic engineering labs and slowing the metabolic rate in the body with other significant changes in the body and organs with the overseer beign the first volunteer

The vault dwellers split into two groups because of this announcement the first the manority accept the advertisement while the majority refuses the change

The mutants populated the vaults in 14 jan 2085

The human population slowly decreases in numbers with more of them starting to volunteer to the project by choice and some go futher to force it on their family freinds but with horrible results with increases in the number of failures

The vault dwellers use the two geck’s to populating the outside world in 23 october 2092

The resident decided to develop plant live that use radiation in its photosynthesis by fundamental reworking of how photosynthesis works at a molecular level

A civil war happens on 1 march 2125 with a shootout between humans and mutants after the tens the humans were winning because of how fast their bodies move while the mutants didn’t have the same energy but because of their overwhelming numbers they win

The Prisoners and unenvolved humans were punished by mutating them and turning them into slaves the leader mcready of the civil war was turned into a specific mutant with plant cells that were developed to use radiation for photosynthesis by altering the genes that are responsible for aging and set free in the radiated capital in 1 april 2125

Mcready is up north with his heavy body until he can’t walk his body sticks to the soil roots growing from his flesh to find water outside his thirsty body to become a tree on 10 december 2126 because of him the surrounding area becomes populated with plants again with blood red color under the sky with fruits that anyone eat from get a prion disease two cults two religious developed there worshiping the the old tree for different reasons one for healing he waste from radiation the other for satisfying their cannibalism desire for human blood and flesh

yeah, it never really did make much sense. i think they should've just made a military bunker like mariposa instead of a vault. maybe theres a mod out there that could do it?
 
V87 and east coast need another fucking full-staff department of writers to work on it, that's how bad the writing, the background, the scarcity of all of it.

But we shall not have anything official working, and asking for amateur (aka modders) would be too much.

Yeah this game needs a whole new story to be fixed It's bizarre how most if not all of fallout 3 main storyline is just plagiarism from the classic games with the laziest explanation and out of character actions merged into one rotten tomato in a broken tree in the middle of the desert
To be fair fallout 3 there some parts of it that could work if the radiation doesn't last 200 years the enclave was just a small branch and doesn't have an ia has no loyalty to them as their president (like why? They will most likely use it to study and develop and store data they are the faction who most cherish humanity why would ai be their president) the Lyons are a new military faction and had no connection to the bos and replaced the super mutants with something else and no harold there

Don't make it a Vault, and don't make it produce Super Mutants.

FEV had to be refined to create Super Mutants. If West-Tek had a facility near Washington, DC the strain would not be that used by Richard Grey 80 years later.

Well it's vault but without fev and no mention to it the post is about a whole new virus the idea is that fev was cured to the new plague so it must be there some old super soldier project the military of the government done since chems like psycho don't last long and do problems after the war (addiction and this stuff) but didn't go well since the virus have random results on the body

I think I take issue with a Vault experiment involving the production of super soldiers because that doesn't directly relate to isolation studies for the purpose of space colonization, which is what we were led to believe the Vault experiments were meant for.

Maybe there's a different way of framing it. I like the idea in the OP involving the Vault editing people's genes to fit the environment they'll be taking over, and I think you could even work it so that maybe the people in this Vault are opposed to the healing of the Wasteland (via Project Purity) because they'll be unfit for the environment. It's playing God versus playing God from two sides, basically.

Do the mutants from the Vault have to be hostile? Could it be that there are multiple types of mutants, some who are actually engineered for life in the Vault (their parents created designer babies out of their own ego) while the mutants on the surface are their servants? Perhaps the children in Little Lamplight aren't really children, but another type of mutant from this Vault. You might be inspired for mutant designs from Man After Man by Dougal Dixon.
 
Rewritten V87 = the origin of The Oasis in Fallout 3.

We have seen plenty of beast-centric FEV mutation in the form of Super Mutant Human, Centaur, but how about virus that is designated for flora and plants?

Granted this could be just lazy version of Vault 22. But we can definitely go into druid-like cult about this, the Oasis, Vault 87, and Little Camplight are connected. In fact actually bunch of major settlements. But not every people agree with their rule, so The Big Town formed. Or The Big Town is basically the one of main outpost for Talon Company and by the time the game start, ready to invade the triple settlements, under the payroll of The Enclave.

i imagine it like the mutants do one specific work when it isn't kidnapping or you aren't near to their vault you are safe
as for the types of mutants the ordinary will be tall and muscular with harsh skin maybe blue because why not
read man after man a long time ago i like the small evolved black human at the end who looks like an insect they would work as the fetus made in laboratory with genetic manipulation and extensive use of the virus to create a being that can communicate with animals in various ways even chemically it's like having animal friend (or maybe something like? i will write some sci-fi explanation about them maybe the idea will change to be better) and because of their early nature they need something like a dog or maybe og mole rat carry

the idea of the children in little lamplight being mutants fits the rewrite
children got genetically engineered so their bodies muscles grow but they are still small as kids because their bodies get confused so they don't grow up physically

Yes, basically make it fits with the actual biome of Eastern Coast lol. We have seen that it works with Point Lookout. You can still have post-apocalypse with it.

I want to make the invasion of V87, Little Camplight, and The Oasis to be tragic. Much like why we cannot have Sentient Deathclaws.
You can still work with the Talon Company, and maybe turn things little bit better.

so i decided to change the whole virus idea to genetic engineering labs like Golbolco said because it is better idea than using the virus thing like fev with adding oasis and connecting it to vault 87 lore like how eissa wanted
