This is my second time through, and my game crashed in the same place both times through. After talking to Doctor Li, I talk to Zimmer. I walk to Doctor Preston's clinic, wait a couple seconds and talk to him. I leave walk down the hall past the hotel too the door to the marketplace. This was my first time to rivet city. The game last time locked up and left it on the loading screen forever where the compass thing spins around on the black screen. This time it was an instant crash. I have ollydbg as a just in time debugger and it never pops up. Something about that door though I guess.
On a side note. The elevator controls in the washington monument don't shake with the elevator and looks kinda dumb :-\ maybe after clicking it, they could remove the button and let the elevator graphics have an embedded copy that will move like with the "vibrations"
EDIT: Just did it again. This time I brought dad back followed him to Doctor Li, got the next step in the quest, left to walk down past the clinic/hotel straight at the marketplace. Insta-crash. Doesn't do it as soon as I start the game up again. Something with playing a while then trying to walk straight down the hall at it. possibly some untidy buffer?
EDIT AGAIN: Well, it has to do with playing a while then entering the marketplace from any door. Maybe it's a sign I should stop playing for now...
