Rock Falls - unwinnable?

First time out of the vault
I can't seem to complete Rock Falls because I can't get to the scientist. My lockpicks aren't good enough, and I can't find a key that works on the door anywhere - just a 'house key' that doesn't work and the Gate room key. Is it possible to shoot doors down or something? Or is it possible to return to the bunker in the middle of a mission to recruit someone with better thief skills?
 
One of the raiders in the building opposite has the key. Though it's a fairly low level door to pick, you can equip two lockpicks one in each equipment slot, or use drugs to boost your skill.

Nope no destroying doors in the default game or leaving missions until they are complete.
