saves won't work in F2

Sore

First time out of the vault
hello!
I browsed through the forum, used the "search" and found nothing so this is my first post - if my problem has been discussed earlier please, post a link or ban me without mercy (it'll be a hint to look for it again;]...).
about a year ago I played F2, then stopped and now I wanted to come back but found out that saves, backed up earlier, won't load.
in particular it looks like this:
1. in F2 1.0 saves (in about 7 slots) are visible within the game, but won't load. no surprise, I played ver. 1.02.
2. when updated with an OFFICIAL patch to 1.02 the saves are no longer visible in the save game window - it look just like all the slots are free, which is kinda disappointing:>.
3. when updated (unistalling the game previously) with an unofficial "killap's truly final Fallout 2 patch" found on this forum the saves are visible again, but when I try to load any of them the game crashes to black screen and could be shut down only through ctrl+alt+del.
4. I tried the save converter (found here: http://fallout.gamestats.com/files/util/saveconv.zip). saves are converted (1.0->1.02 and vice versa) but nothing new happens (although I haven't tried 1.0 saves in 1.0 game - but I don't wanna play with so many disturbing bugs)

some info:
install: minimal (when I played a year ago I used humongous, but I tried it also now and the problem remains)
comp: Athlon XP 1700+@2400+, 1 GB RAM, radeon 9600 128 MB (catalyst 8.172.0.0) (earlier gf2mx400, same problem), winxp sp2, mouse, keyboard, enough disk space;)

so: help or ban?

regards

Nah, you gave enough background info. Except for one important point, which would be which version of Fallout 2 the archived saves were on. If you don't remember, you could very well have had a mod or something else similar, and therefore without the same game state I doubt it would load up any of the saves.

> which version of Fallout 2 the archived saves were on

well, I did write " no surprise, I played ver. 1.02." :).....

and I'm 200% sure I didn't use any mods - I didn't know that they even exist for F2 'till about a few days ago:)...

ok, I tried the "uninstal and clear registry" thing, and the problem changed. in ver 1.02d I can now see the saves and they load. everything is fine until I try to save - I get the "unable to save game" error. this happens only in locations, like Sierra Army Depot or New Reno, on the wasteland the game saves without any problem. no mods installed (though I tried some BEFORE uninstalation), the same happens when game is updated to 1.051.
any guess?

Well, this appears to be similar to "Can't load with a missing diff map", so do you think it might be due to how you have restored your savegames?

What does your folder system look like? It should look a bit like this when you restore your save games. The only folders you need to move and save were the \SLOT*\ folders and keep them intact. How did you back up and restore, exactly?

\Fallout 2
-Fallout2.exe
-Critter.dat
-Master.dat
-patch00o.dat
-fallout2.cfg
---\data
----worldmap.dat
------\sound
------\proto
------\maps
------\savegame
---------\SLOT*
----------save.dat
----------*.SAV (maps)
------------\proto
---------------\critters
----------------*.pro
---------------\items
----------------*.pro

I had a similar problem five years ago. the saves wouldn't load, and I was somewhere in the wasteland, fighting Fire Geckos with Flame Thrower and wearing Combat Armor, if my memory serves me correctly. I couldn't load it, no way!
after I tried to load the save for third or fourth time, my computer crashed and it turned out that my graphic card (Matrox G400) was dead. gone.
did the bug in the game cause it?

Whoa. Completely off-topic, and the answer to this question is a, rather obvious, NO. Graphics cards don't just die because of some software error, especially not one corresponding to loading saves in a game.

Robot Santa:

my folders are fine
backup method: winrar on "slot" folders:)

I can't really explain it, but the problem is gone:). I tried another "trick". I downloaded unofficial 1.05 patch - the archive contained separate fixes for UK and US version. I have the US one, so I installed the proper patch and... nothing new happened:]. Then I overwritten .exe of the game with the one from the UK version of the patch which readme said NOT to do. Saves of course still didn't work. When I was close to plunge in the sea of despair, by some mysterious stroke of fate I thought about overwriting .exe again with the US one. And this time it WORKED. Praise the Twilight Zone;].

so it was just a bizarre coincidence?

Yeah, how likely is it that a computer component would malfunction while the computer is actually turned on? I think we have to call Sander's motives into question here; what interests does he really represent?
