Sawyer and inventory

On the BIS feedback forum Leop had this question:

One hoplessly unrealistic thing that seems to be common practise in CRPG's is the inventory. Will this be the same in Fallout 3?

J.E. Sawyer replied this way:

Probably. To be honest, I think RPGs would be incredibly annoying if the PCs were restricted to carrying realistic amounts of equipment.

Then Laslo Laslo asked about inventory mmanagement in Planscape:Torment, ICEWIND DALE and Baldur's Gate. Sawyer replied:

Inventory management was among the lamest aspects of those games. I've never had much of a problem with weight-based inventory, because it's directly related to a character stat specified by the player (ST). The player has control over it, and it's one of the many tradeoffs that they have to consider when setting their ST vs. other primary attributes.
But volume-based, "realistic" inventory? Think about how much even a strong character could "realistically" carry when volume is considered. Now think about how easy it would be to access any of your inventory from inside a backpack. Pretty slow. Tippy Joe with his 80 lb. backpack throwing him off is certainly realistic, but if it costs 15 AP to get a keycard out of your backpack, I don't think anyone's really going to appreciate that.

Mr. Wible then asked what if it was a sort of "Survival" RPG, to wich Sawyer had this to say:

But Fallout really isn't. It isn't Das Schwarze Auge. The setting is post-apocalyptic, but very little emphasis is given to the PC's realistic struggle against the environment (short of radiation).

Thanks go to OutOfArgument for the heads up.

Agreed.

JE is waving in and out...sometimes, he says really excellent stuff...other times, I wonder what he's thinking.

Hey, I gotta say though, we carry well over 100lbs of gear in the Army... So, it's not "terribly" unrealistic... And when we jump, we carry everything we need in our rucks... not to include the actuall weight of clothing, LBE (load bearing equipment), other assorted pieces of equipment and the parachute it's self, along with the reserve. So, you're talking just about 200 pounds attached to you because the parachute it's self weighs over 60lbs... And we do have to carry all that equipment (including the chutes) off the DZ. Besides, if you were doing that all the time, you'd become pretty well conditioned to it.

... throw on some power armour and hey presto, you could carry quite a bit. I also much prefer Weight based over volume-based. Arcanum was pretty bad that way. Not only did you have to play Inventory Tetris™ all the time, just to fit in your one extra Ginka Root so you could make a healing salve, but if you emptied your inventory, you could actually carry loads of really heavy armour. Which just seemed strange.

I'd actually have preferred some kind of grouping mechanism in Arcanum so whenever I had 5 Ginika Roots, it'd show the one with a little 5 in the bottom corner, just like it does in Fallout with multiple items.

Impedimentia

Impedimentia

Moving "volumes" verses "mass".

Much appreciate this fudging of reality. If one wanted to get REALLY
cruel one would employ GRAVITY. Having to carry 80 plus pounds of 'stuff' up hill and down. Dry packed trail or muddy ruts. Carry a 5 gallon bucket of dry wall taping mud for 3 blocks and you'll be wishing it was skim coat variety in weight.

How about that bundle of asphault shingles, want to tote it up on the roof for me pal? Defy gravity on that
40 foot ladder and negotiate the sliding coeficient of the roof pitch at your own risk.

Fatigue baby!

Consider having to employ 'power to weight ratios' and caloric consumption and fluid retention, vs. sweating. And for the truely anal, evacuation of liquid and solid waste.

Having just passed my gear through a non biblical form of the "eye of the needle". Yes, I appreciate not having to micro manage the material handling side of life. Leave the virtues of 4 ply verus 2 ply 'softness' to those that "give a sh't".

Still have 90% of my impedimentia in a vast variety of cardboard boxes.
If wishes were U-Hauls, then I'd have it all compacted by some relativistic, speed o' light phenomenom, and toted the mass as "gold bricks".

Speaking of bricks and boat anchors........
Yes, I did throw away my collection of MFM hard drives...........
