Sawyer is cool

Lived Through the Heat Death
There`s a very interesting discussion happening on the snazzy RPGCodex with J.E. Sawyer.
This particular moment cought my attention , Whipporowill from Eye-on-Troyka asked this:

Btw JE, if you want to do a TB game, leave the sinking ship before it drags you down with it. I think you have some good ideas, but they´re wasted were you are. Just my honest opinion, that´s all.

He got this heartfelt response by J.E. Sawyer:

If I abandon my team, I don't know if I'd be able to respect myself. It can be very hard, at times, but what we are working on now is something that many of us have fought to work on for many years. It's something for which we have endured a great deal. We've had to make games that we weren't always proud of. We've had to try to deal with the fact that a lot of gamers either hate us or hate the company we work for, and don't respect us (which is understandable). We've had to watch some of our best friends and co-workers leave the company.

Personally, I had to accept that a game I worked on for two and a half years, that I put more creative energy into than anything else in my life, was indefinitely shelved. And I had to accept the responsibility of taking over the lead design position on Van Buren after Chris Avellone, who has far more respect among developers and fans, left the company. It's hard, but obviously, if I didn't think the trade-off was worth it, I wouldn't still be around.

I'm not a great designer, but I try, and this is what I've wanted to work on since 1999.

So NMA newsie Dan asked this:

I know you are working on a project JE, and as such probably feel devoted to it, but I wonder after all the decision being forced upon you, would you leave BIS if you had another option?

Great reply from Sawyer:

I've had a few other options. Maybe someday I'll tell you guys about it all.

But really, I just can't wait to say, "This is what Fallout fans have been waiting for since TORN!"

I`m very glad you are staying for now Sawyer, hang in there, i hope we all can pull this through.
I have a feeling that if the game ever goes out, it will be the best RPG in years, and a great Fallout game.

Hate him one minute, love him the next.... J.E., you're alright in my book - just please don't try to convince us to buy FO:PoS again :D

GAH! So many emotions!

...I guess he's okay. I mean, you have to respect him, at least he's trying to do some good for us...it's just, arg! Sometimes this whole situation irritates me.

Well...godspeed JE. ...But yeah, I still ain't buyin' POS.

The weakness of Congress under the Articles of Confederation prevented retaliation by the central government. Power was repeatedly asked to regulate commerce, but was refused by the states, upon whom rested the carrying out of such commercial treaties as Congress might negotiate. Eventually the states themselves attempted retaliatory measures, and during the years 1783-88, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia levied tonnage dues upon British vessels or discriminating tariffs upon British goods. Whatever effect these efforts might have had were neutralized by the fact that the duties were not uniform, varying in different states from no tariffs whatever to duties of 100 percent. This simply drove British ships to the free or cheapest ports and their goods continued to flood the market. Commercial war between the states followed and turned futility into chaos.[13] Adoption of the Constitution meant the elimination of many of the economic ills under which industry and commerce had struggled since the war. A reorganization was absolutely essential and the immediate economic results were salutary. Its most important additions to the power of Congress were those relating to finance and commerce – it enabled the federal government to levy taxes, regulate trade, coin money, protect industry, and direct the settlement of the West, and, as later events proved, to establish credit and redeem its securities. Under it, freedom of trade was insured throughout the young republic.[14] In the months leading up to the passage of the tariff Act, the U.S. Congress received several petitions from different cities representing manufacturing groups asking for relief from the flood of European imported goods. The United States Congress answered the petitions of these groups for urgent attention, by making the Tariff of 1789 Bill the first major Bill to be considered in its first session and passed it.

Made a great case for open discussion of design potentials.

Depending on the spirit of the moment, tenacity or hard headedness, will get ya'll where ya'll choose to go. Maybe won't look
like Kansas, so common expectations will be irrelevant.

I won`t be buying FOPoS, no way, but after beeing told the conditions they are working on FO3, and all the problems with the Vivendi/Interplay crisis, i have to say i admire their tenacity.

Atoga they aren`t idiots, they can have many faults, but lack of smartness and love for the game aren`t two of those faults.

I still won`t buy FOPoS though

I consider JE to be a talented dev, one capble of coming up with a good Fallout 3.

That is not the issue though, as talented as he might be, trying to make something good in IPLY would probably get marketting to explain why they need to change it.

He should make a diary describing the tribulations involved in this game and release it on the internet when he's done at Interplay. Frankly, I'm very curious as to what is his doing and what is really beyond his control.

I never said I hated him, I just told him he could bite me. I like JE, but about the fobos guilt trip - bite me.

I agree, that would be great
