(...)Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall, presently at Loot Droop. They are currently seeking funding via Kickstarter for an old school RPG, in the vein of masterworks of the ancient (gaming) times.

Who are they, you might ask? Brenda Brathwaite should be recognizable to anyone who likes classic RPGs, as the lead designer of the critically acclaimed Wizardry 8. She is also known for her work on the Realms of Arkania series (based on the German role playing game Das Schwarze Auge, The Dark Eye) and Jagged Alliance. Tom Hall should be even more recognizable, for his work as designer on the Commander Keen series and the quirky Anachronox role playing game, as well as tens of other titles too numerous to mention.

Their plan? To release an old school RPG. Built around a party of up to four characters, all created by the player, the game is slated to feature a complex, skill-based character system with different races and professions to choose from, a detailed fantasy world with at least five known NPC races, recruitable characters, hundreds of quests and multiple endings. Oh, and did we mention it will feature turn-based combat?

Damn it, Kickstarter, just take all my money already. After I pay the bills for hospital visits after the Kickstarter video killed me. You can check out the pitch below and the project page here.

:aiee:

As a person who loves Wizardry 8 TO THE DEATH, I endorse this Kickstarter.

Buy two RPGs, get one for free! C'mon guys you can totally trust us with this, just look at all the names we drop here!

You really don't recognize the developers helming the project? Where was your negativity with Project Eternity, eh? The principle is identical for both projects.

This sounds pretty good, but I want to see more info before I even consider contributing. I may just get it after the fact, if it meets its goal that is.

Because the idea to create two RPGs instead of one if we get enough money!1 is pretty retarded? Small hints like with the mobile devices are very fishy? Namedropping a guy who has worked on such awesome and immersive RPG gems like Doom? A developer/studio (?) who hasnt released any RPG at all lately, unlike Obsidian?

Yeah. This sure wets my pants in excitment. :smug:

So Anachronox counts for nothing? The Wizardry series and Wizardry 8? You're being negative for negativity's sake and purposefully misrepresent people for no other reason than malice.

Did you actually read the Kickstarter description?

All our stretch goals add up to an epic kick-axe game experience, but none more so than the $1.9M mark. If you're kind enough to help us reach this amount of funding, we'll create TWO FULL games - one designed by Brenda Brathwaite and one designed by Tom Hall. Not only will you cast, smash and slash your way through two full games, the endings of each game provide exclusive NEW game beginnings in the other! Import your crew from Tom's game into Brenda's and vice versa. The ending you create affects not only your new game beginning (if you choose it), but also provides unique advantages that you earn no other way.

Is it that hard to understand? They're not making two separate games, they're making two full games utilizing the same skillset, setting and engine.

God forbid someone actually offers an interesting stretch goal.

Any game that has John Romero attached to it is one that'll never see my money.

I don't want to be his bitch again.

You know, I'd be perfectly happy if they could just get Wizardry 8 on Steam or GoG so I could buy that game. Nevertheless, I'm intrigued by this one and will likely back it if it gets closer to its goal.

I'm a huge Wizardry 8 fan and i would have pledge a lot for a Wizardry "spiritual" sequel.
So i'm very sad to say that this kickstarter sounds horrible to me.
Tom Hall has almost nothing to do with cRPG (a minor involvement on anachronox) and untill very recently we havn't a single idea of what kind of old school RPG they wanted to do.
At least for PE we had 3 very well known cRPG designers/programers and a studio that have released recent games. Moreover we knew from the start that PE was gonna be an IE cRPg "spiritual" successor.
Much more info than just old school...
Awful pitch video too, what a waste.

A developer/studio (?) who hasnt released any RPG at all lately, unlike Obsidian?

This is why I gave to Eternity, but haven't to others, for whatever problems their games have had, Obsidian have proven themselves by releasing several high profile, large scale games recently and over the years. These smaller and newer development companies, even if they do have veteran leaders who have proven themselves long ago, seem like a bigger risk to fail to deliver as the teams working on the game and company as a whole are much less proven in the modern game market.

Yeah, being Project Leader and Lead Designer is so minor, it's almost totally insignificant.

At least for PE we had 3 very well known cRPG designers/programers and a studio that have released recent games. Moreover we knew from the start that PE was gonna be an IE cRPg "spiritual" successor.

And why are Brenda and Tom unkown? Just because they haven't been releasing a game every other year for the past decade doesn't mean they're irrelevant.

Much more info than just old school...

How?

Yes, he was and he apologized for the advertisement.

I don't really care about the ad (I thought it was funny when it came out) but Daikatana really showed that Romero can't make a game without Carmack.

Devil's Advocate:
Shadowrun Returns is going to have tablet support but the (scarce yet existent) in-game assets look pretty damn good.

Seriously, how the hell did they not come up with at least a working title? Something so simple could be really hurting this Kickstart. At least the update provides a bit of information on the setting.
