I started playing "Shining Force" today. It's a great game, you should all try it.

Shining Force 1 and 2 are ok. Until you get your hands on Bahamut Lagoon of course. The art of SF is VERY CORNY ala The Legend of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon (yes, thats the name of the game...doesn't people realize how ASS-DEMOLISHING GAY it sounds?!). The story is very cliché in both of them and one of the characters is bugged in the emulator.

When Shining Force came out, I regretted not having a Megadrive: the characters and plot seemed well-designed, and the graphics were simply stunning!

I got my hands on SF 1 & 2 last year and played them both all the way through; some ten years after their release, I think they're still really great games! Difficulty is rather well-judged, and you do have to use the various characters (a couple of them are too weak though). And the battle scenes are still beautiful! :D

I've played both Shining Force 1 and 2 but I didn't beat neither. I think I got jaded on Shining Force 2 with what class I should change each of my characters. It's a good game (both of them!) for the first few battles but it goes slightly downhill later on.

However, if you liked Shining Force, you'd probably enjoy Final Fantasy Tactics also.

I've never played Final Fantasy
Should I try it?

I finally got Final Fantasy Tactics the other day. I haven't played it too much because of ToEE, but it seems pretty fun and it has a really in-depth combat and class system. I think I spent about an hour on the first battle and didn't even notice the time go by.

Back to topic: What system was Shining Force made for?

Gustav, I'd recommend only the Final Fantasy Tactics game. It's out for Playstation or Gameboy Advance. The rest of the Final Fantasy games will only be enjoyable if you like console RPGs and, uh, anime. Tactics is more strategic with RPG elements.

Montez, both the Shining Force games were made for Sega Genesis (called Sega Megadrive in other countries) and they came out for the excruciating price of $60, which wasn't that bad at the time. Nowadays, if you can find them, you can probably get the console used for twenty dollars or even less.

The thing is that I don't have playstation or gameboy advance.

I got it from "Sega smash pack 2"

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the few good things Square did until they went down the "fuck plot, go shinies" route. I haven't played X, XI or X2 as I don't have a PS2 and I don't plan to buy one either. FFT is good honest fun and the plot is good enough although the amount of things you'll have to read is amazing. This is one of the games that has a shitload of inside story (politics, religion, etc) and I love it for it. The battles are a lot of fun and quite hard if you start leveling up (yep, this is the game that invented progessively difficult battles as your levels climb...NOT FF8). One flaw was the inclusion of the God of Cheese, T.G. Cidolfas Orlandu. I like the story because the main character gets the shit end of the stick at the ending (Damn Delita...you woman-killing-betrayer fuck).

It gets a rating of -9000 dicks.
