First time out of the vault
Im trying to install Fallout 1 on my newer computer which has windows xp. At first when i clicked install it said 'There is a newer Directx version available on this CD. It is required for the installation of this program. Would you like to install it?' I clicked yes and it asked me if i was sure i wanted to install directx 3a. I clicked yes and it brought me to a box that showed me Direct x subsystems and it listed componenets but Direct3d was not installed, the box next to 'Enable Direct3d Hardware Acceleration' was selected. I clicked the button that said 'reinstall directx' and after pressing ok nothing ahppened. Is this why XP users must install manually? Im guessing yes so i checked out how to install the game manually and i was wondering, exactlly what is needed on this step.....

# Copy (CDROM):\program\win\falloutw.___ (Fallout 1) or (CDROM):\program\win\fallout2.___ (Fallout 2) to the folder you created and rename it to falloutw.exe/fallout2.exe.

...
Exactly what is noted. Copy the file and rename it. Seems quite elementary.

Also, DirectX has nothing to do with needing to re-install the game. And your description is really confusing, Directx 3 is a much, much older version than whatever version you have (probably 9c), and hence should *not* be installed. It's probable that it hasn't installed because it detected that there was a newer version after all, but I'm not sure how they programmed this.
If the box next to Direct3d Hardware Acceleration was enabled, then DirectX is installed.
