Simpsons v. South Park

Junkmaster
My wife, a long time Simpsons fan, said something remarkable last night- that Southpark was better than the Simpsons.

Do you agree?

Your wife has gone mad Welsh, if not.. she's been manipulated by her girlfriends or something.

The first 5-6 seasons of th Simpson's are classics. The recent seasons have been bad, nothing more than recycled ideas about Homer's stupidity.

Southpark is better in many respects, including originality and wilingness to push the envelope. For instance the swearing episode. Classic.

Of course both of these choices pale in comparison to The Family Guy, but that wasn't the question...

Certainly not.

While South Park is an excellent show, it goes for the jugular, and often goes way to far.

The Simpsons get an intelligent point across, with their witty social commentary, but they don't need to lace it with "shits" and farting.

Plus, there are more memorable episodes of The Simpsons than there are of South Park.

Of course the Simpsons has more memorable episodes, its been around for like 12 years vs 5 for South Park! Fact is I cannot remember a memorable Simpsons episode except for the ones I see in syndication, ie the OLD ONES.

The Simpsons intelligent points have devolved into simple plugs at society with an often recyled satire. South Park takls much more edgy and sophisticated topics that a mainstream show like the Simpsons won't touch.

As for shits and farting, they are included because not only are they funny they keep dimwits who don't see the deeper meaning watching, not unlike the "D'ohs!" in the Simpsons.

The funny thing about going for the jugular is that that is what is needed, to get through all the PC bullshit being flung around. It is shows like South Park that give me hope for the uncensored and open dialogue that America needs. IMO, of course.

The Simpsons would be the answer if they kept up the quality that they had the first 6 seasons. But Ill agree with your wife. SouthPark is alot more honest, relies alot less on simple gags like referances and more on social commentary (like the Deathcamp of Tolerance episode). Not only that, but they deal with real issues alot more often. For instance, the Smoking episode was classic, as well as the Mormon one........and both of those are from the latest 7th Season.

Anyone know who my Avatar is?

Her point exactly.

As people have said, South Park is more for the newer generation of people. There's only so much violence, death, cursing, and bad crap that can be funny. Its more of an accomplishment to get laughs for not using stupid crap like that. I want to know whether tv reflects society, or if TV creates society, but that's an unanswered question.

In any case, Simpsons > South Park. If you discount the newer seasons, then they have about equal airtime (The Simpson's early better seasons). Which can only mean that Simpsons are more memorable. Also, I hear more quoting from the Simpsons than from South Park.

Agreed.

Also its true that the Simpsons older shows are better. It's also true that they've been around about a decade longer than southpark. We can only guess if Southpark can produce a good show after so many years. We know that while the Simpsons might not be in their prime anymore, they can still put out a Show thats better than any other crap out there today.

this is the 13th season for the simpsons if you don't count the early skits on the tracy ullman show.

actually, btw, homer has been revamped a bit this year (actually started last year). the writers finally realized that the #1 problem with the simpsons is that homer got so ignorant. he was the constant slapstick relief making life hard for everyone in the show and audiences just got turned off. one joke gigs never last. they've also made it a point to recognize this fact. this year, as well, bart's back to some of the old cliches (eat my shorts) and they're re-inserting them in humorous ways, i.e. pointing out the fact that catch phrases are so cliche and then bart says "ay caramba!"

IF they manage to hold on to the changes they're implementing without resorting to the evil bastard homer again, the simpsons will actually be worth watching for another few years at least.

given all that, as much as i love south park, i have to admit the simpsons is a better show. it's clever without trying to be clever. south park is in-your-face humor but it might suffer from the same thing homer went through. we shall see :)

They're all kinda swearing episodes, hehe.

Yeah i agree with a lot of what you guys said. I can always watch the simpsons. Its on three times a day here and its become a reflex to turn on the TV at that time. I don't have cable any more so no more south park for me, but i remember it being my favorite show a few years ago. But a few months ago i played the South Park episodes i have on tape (1st-3rd season) and it wasn't that funny. But with the simpsons, its always funny to me. And yes, i always hear the simpsons quoted more. I guess South park is more of a at-one-time-period comedy, while the simpsons are timeless.

Greatest show ever. It took me a while but i've got every episode from all the seasons. There's no new ones right?

I never liked either show, but if I really had to choose I would probably say the Simpsons.

Mohrg

Simpsons = Best.

Southpark can be really good though. And since they can make episodes so fast, they can make commentary on things happening within a matter of a couples weeks, as opposed to months for The Simpsons.

I like both, but I have to go with The Simpsons.

Go get a new wife Welsh, this one has gone whack, and once they go whack, they don't go back.

Simpsons pwn all.

The Simpsons is probably the best long running show in television history. Sure, it isn't as good as the first five or so series, but it's still good enough that a poor episode is better than most other crap on the TV. South Park is also good, but it probably hit a slump faster than our favorite yellow family did. Has improved some after they removed the one trick pony Kenny from the show though.

She's actually a fan of both and Southpark is very new to her. She appreciates it as being more outragious than Simpsons and has figured out the characters. But she's a long time Simpsons fan, but we only watch the repeats. Too many repeats aren't healthy.

And no, I will not trade her in.

Pipboy, one thing you will come to realize is that, sooner or later, they are all whacked and were whacked before you met them. It's only with time that one learns the truth of such things.

But one doesn't dump a person you love because they are whacked. Rather one loves them despite, or for, their whackiness.
That or get a Tazer gun for the bad days when the whackiness is too much to handle. Nothing like a jolt of electricity to make things right.

I knew what I was getting into when I married this one, and went in full throttle. (Nudge- no)

However, I vaguely recall a Pipgirl. Any relationship?

Same here.

Simpsons may not be so good currently, but it will outlast Southpark due to the subtle, timeless humour, true humanity and because the characters are much easier to relate to. The Simpsons is quoted more than the bible where I come from and people who attack or misquote it can expect to be fed to the rabid echidnas. Many manerisms and phrases have been assimilated into English from the Simpsons with positive results. However I am worried about Southpark's. In Australia small kids now call each other gay @#@#@^@@^ soley because of Southparks negative influence on popular culture. Sydney has an oversupply of single women due to a large population of gay guys and the token positive messages of the show are overwhelmed by the subconcious offensive comments whose purpose is apparently to entertain.

Although I think Southpark is a good show I think they should not damage society at the cost of entertainment. Satire can be done with less meaningless profanity although you have to be careful to keep the facist PC bastards away from social commentary.

The thin brown line.

If you think Simpsons has more meaning, morals, social commentary, etc, you're not looking hard enough. The first seasons of Southpark really sucked, but they're excellent now. It isn't pointless violence or swearing to entertain, its to show meaning through ironic truth. Southpark seems to use reverse psychology. They show the negative things in life, but with an ironic twist, allowing you to see the true meaning. Then just add in comedy.

The only way it would have a negative effect is if the people watching are ignorant, which is why I don't think immature kids should watch it.

In terms of laughs... hard to say, probably the older Simpsons. Overall, Southpark. And the new Simpsons... ugh.
