I cannot play Sims2. I've reinstalled, I've followed other sites tech ideas for people in similar situations (Sims opens up to splash page, then stops), and I can't figure out what else to do.

My hardware is as follows:
Nvidia Geforce5200
512 Memory
52x32 CD/DVD Drive
2.5 Ghz Pentium 4
67.5 Gig Hard Drive

Wild guesses:
- try changing the colour depth of your OS
- try changing the resolution of your OS
- try finding a "safe mode" and see if that works
- check the readme and see if it has a troubleshooting section
- check your installation directory and the Sims 2 directory in your home directory for crash/error/debug logs and post any relevant info

It'd also help if you'd state how you've tried to solve the problem so far so redundancy can be avoided.

I've never had problems with The Sims 2, but Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 showed a similar behaviour until I changed the colour depth around (they crashed silently while loading or didn't react at all).

What I've tried doing:
*Turning off anti-virus software (I'm not sure why, but this is recommended in the manual)
*Terminating all background applications (besides system, explorer, and taskmgr)
*Patching

What would changing my color settings entail? Dropping resolution?

There's a "color" drop down menu next to the screen resolution (size) setting in your display properties.

I haven't had any other problems, though I'm not a virus expert. I've run avast and mcafee virus scans, and both Spyware Blaster and Spybot spyware scans, so I feel comfortable in that area.

After troubleshooting on the tech support page, and following all onscreen instructions, I'm still having troubles.

I've also defragmented and ran disc cleanup.

You should try vacuuming your PC.

It solved all kinds of problems I had with my computer.

N.B.: I mean like, literally, vacuuming it. With a vacuum cleaner.

Change your desktop color depth by right-click on desktop>properties>Settings>Color Quality. Set it to 32-bit. I find it solve most of the display problem.

And do you have the latest game patch :?:

Yeah, it's patched.

My desktop is defaulted at 32 Bit, and I've tried it at 16 just to check.

Already done that. :(

I got a new card (ATI 256 MB X1300). so here's hoping it'll do better.

Does it work without the patch?

Because, y'know, EA isn't known for great craftsmanship.

I think it came in an updated form, because when I downloaded the patch, it told me I was already updated.

Update:
Patched my new graphics card, and it still didn't work.

Face it, man. God hates you and doesn't want you to play Sims 2.

it pointing more and more to a disk problem. Maybe you should try and install it on an other PC to see if your PC is(n't) the problem. If its a disk problem go back to switch them with the store.

Making a image from the disks might work as last resort.
