I was thinking last night that the more you use a skill the better you should get at that skill. yes i know that you can improve your skills every level but i think for combat skills you use them so often that your bound to improve them through use.
I mean like every 100 times you use a combat skill you gain 1 skill point or something.

give me your thoughts

it should me more like, you're only allowed to add a certain amount of skill pts. to a skill depending on how much you've used it. So if you only use small guns rarely, you will only be able to add, say, 5 pts. each level. And if you use that skill a lot, you can add more points to it.

darklands

A 1992 fantasy historical fiction CRPG, Darklands, did improve skills through use. There were no experience points and no levels, either. It was pretty cool, IMO.

RE: darklands

I played Darklands too, but how are you gonna work out the perks?.

New Skillsystem? How?

Are you guys talking about normal XP and a percentage of earned Skillpoints that may only be assigned in comparaison of use.

or

Having the skillpoints assign themselves to skills, in which case I have the same question Morpheus has.

or

The normal system combined with the one above. Gain normal skillpoints, but get skillpoint bonusses in comparaison to use.

or finally

Have XP assigned at every skill, so they level up at different times.

or

Other, namely... (fill in the blank)

Which one?

Cuius testiculos habes, habeas cardia et cerebellum.

hey hey hey -- hey HEY hey hey

Oh, I wasn't talking about theoretical Fallout sequels -- I was just trying to point out that there have been games that use natural skill progression. I don't necessarily believe that such a change would be good for Fallout sequels. I'm not allowed to discuss anything resembling future Fallout titles. However, I'm pretty sure that I can participate in discussions about system mechanics and game technology in general. Even now, though, I have to keep my involvement to a minimum. Sorry.

wasteland had that (the mother of them all)
plus you got bonuses each level you gained

Thing is with his system, skills that dont get much use will be piss poor to start with and stay shit ie lockpicking, as there aren't that many locks to pick, so when u do use it u will fail.

which is exactly why you should try and develop lock picking. you dont always want to do thinks right??? but you do them anyway. Also i was thinking about this only in the context of combat skills.

Ug

So you're suggesting that they have two completely different skills systems, one for combat skills and one for non-combat skills? I think that's one of the worst FO3 ideas I've heard, no offence intended.

How are you supposed to get better at a skill you never use?

the game should take in consideration that when you start you are not skilled at anything and as the game progresses you get better . IE bigger enemys better chalenges
