Slow map travel in FO2

TychoTheItinerant

First time out of the vault
I'm running FO2 in Wine with official patch and Killap's unofficial patch installed, and I honestly do not remember my character's red "pipper" moving so slowly in relation to in-game time elapsing. Didn't want to immediately point the finger at the unofficial patch, so I figured I would ask here in Gameplay & Tech first.

Anybody else have any idea what's responsible for the SLOW map travel? In the time it would have taken to move from The Den to VC I could have made and enjoyed a large sandwich (if it weren't for all the encounters).

Please read the readme that comes with my patch. If speeds on the world map are too slow, then this can be adjusted to one's liking.

Edit: Err, I just noticed you said you are running this in Wine. Interesting since I am pretty sure sfall will not work under Wine which means speeds on the world map should be very fast depending on your CPU speed...

Well, I am playing latest megamod (2.34) which includes your patch too with wine and speeds are ok (a LOT slower than in normal version, but at least this way there are more encounters).

Seems to be functioning perfectly to me. And I'll check that readme.

I meant that sfall (which is a dll that hooks into the game) will not work under Wine (without some changes). Did you look at this?

If sfall is indeed working properly, then modifying the relevant settings in the ddraw.ini will solve your problem.

Aha, it would seem that sfall was indeed not working properly. I have made the changes in winecfg and ddraw.ini and everything seems to be working perfectly now. My apologies.

how far is one supposed to go in how much time?
i mean i know thats hard to answer since theres different terrains
but say how long on the in game clock is it supposed to take to go from arroyo to klamath the first time?

if the in game clock is running at the right pace does it matter how fast your marker moves?

The amount of time that happens in game doesn't change. But, this is a factor to people who want to control the number of encounters they have while traveling across the worldmap (the faster the rate, the player will have fewer random encounters, unless those percentages are also modified).

O i didnt realize encounters were literally tied to real world time spent traveling

so i guess no one really cares about in game time spent traveling then?

where is that file for adjusting the rate of special encounters and such?

In the Data/Data folder, look at the worldmap.txt file.

And, no, I doubt people are concerned about the game time spent traveling from place to place. They are most likey either concerned about the encounter rates or just prefer to zip along from location to location as fast as possible (real world time).

I have been playing it while trying to roleplay on my own by doing things like giving away supplies to needy people

I'd like the travel time to be as accurate as possible, as close as the the developers intentions, for such things as the appropriate quests with timers and all that

anyone have any idea what its supposed to be?
or was it just whatever peoples RAM happened to be back in the day?

The recommended system requirements (from the readme) are:
Windows 95/98
120MHz Pentium
32 MB RAM
Find a computer with those specs (made around 1999), do a full install, and that will be roughly what the developers intended.

Personally, I feel that an average of an encounter every 3-4 squares of mountain terrain and 4-5 of desert (both are 4-5.5 days of game time) is about right. No more than one encounter between Klamath and the Den, at least two from the Den to Modoc. Over the course of the game, at least as much time should be spent in random fights as in planned battles in cities.
