Smarter AI friends

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I think it would be really cool if you could get NPC's in your group, that was sort of self sufficent and there is no need to micro manage them so much, and that they can explore/interact with their enviroment aswell, even whilst following you, maybe when you visit a town they can go and check some places and maybe make comments on them, etc. Make them feel more 'alive' so to speak, instead of them being dead followers shooting what you shoot (and sometimes bursting your own ass)

See, I'd like to see something like that too.

Unfortunately, Bethesda's current examples of friendly AI is about ten times worse that Fallout 1 & 2 had.

I'm pretty sure the only thing we can count on is that they'll get in our line of fire repeatedly, then shoot us without mercy despite the fact that we're helping them find their (insert Bethesdaesque quest item here).

So kind of exactly like Fallout 1 & 2 ai then?

/except in Fallout 1 & 2 they just start out by shooting you in the back.

Yeah, I have never seen good AI in a FPS or RPG game. At least not that I can remember.

In KoToR your AI fellas felt alive, even it was just through many scripted events :)

But still, them initiating conversation about things you see/do was a nice touch

That would be a pretty cool thing, if they bought ammo themselves, ate, and slept, and maybe if you are traveling if they bugged you for items that they are running low on. See, that's exactly the kind of thing I want to see in a game like Fallout 3 or Stalker: Clear Sky. Though I doubt that F3 will have any AI close to that.

Wasn't there an interview about how dogmeat would explore on his own and attempt to collect items for you if you commanded him to? That sort of counts I guess.

Reminds me of this 1992 arcade game where you fly around and shoot shit and then your drone collects the goodies.

Overkill? That game was a lot of fun. And about as Falloutey as Fallout 3 will be.

You my friend have never played half life 2.

They not only don't ever shoot you, they get the fuck out of the way AND take cover!

What about Stalker? that game's AI is very good in some aspects, such as combat AI, but seriously lacking in the independence and common sense.

I mean, for fuck's sake- I can't tell you how often I find dead bodies near a campfire because the AI is too stupid to avoid walking directly into the fire. Some of them starve to death because they don't get up to find food, which is something I seriously hope will be fixed in Clear Sky.
