sound glitch with Fallout 1 on XP

Installed the game - then launched it (with the compatibility mode), went fine, except for the sound (no sound at all)... then I launched sound.exe, tried different options, but most didnt work [one that resuted in sound] - except for one setup -

IRQ:5
DMA:1

so, I launched the game, there was a sound, but its really lagging the game and is very, very distorted, so I cant actually play F1 normally....

help?

P.S. I have not installed any patches or anything and I disabled hardware acceleration for sound.

I have the same problem on my laptop. I'm running Win XP with SP3. I'm using a Realtek HD Audio soundcard along with the latest drivers dedicated for my system ( 5.10.0.5470 ). I've got the August '08 release of dx 9.0c. I've also tried turning HW acceleration off and on, but no avail. The sound test fails as I can only hear cracks and stuff, but the sound in the intro kinda works. By works I mean the same thing, that my friend already wrote: it's ripped into pieces and lagged. Please help.

Are you running fallout.exe or falloutw.exe?

i run fallout.exe and the sound is laggy ..

but what`s the different ?

Fallout.exe is the DOS version, Falloutw.exe is the Windows version. Try that.

In my case manually installing the game helped. There's no sound.exe in the directory that way, but the sound miraculously works fine.
