A friend told me of the awesomeness of this game. Is it any good? Like, worth a try. Any Engrish? Does it run on a medium PC?

Buy Space Rangers 2 and it comes with the first one, although the sequel is the only one worth playing. It's very addictive and hard as fuck when you start out. I love how stuff is happening on every single system all the time. And stuff isn't stuck in one place, either. Everybody is moving around the galaxy, landing on planets, killing other guys or joining armies, scavenging weapons and junk just like you. There's a real sense of progression. The first time I played at the beginning I had a short mission that required leaving my home system then returning with a bounty or something. When I got back a pirate was waiting for me and promptly beat my ass. After a few days of leveling and getting better spaceships, all pirates everywhere bowed to me or ran like bitches.

The Dominator robot aliens are something to be avoided unless you join an army or kick ass solo. Killing them all wins the game. For the most part they can be avoided unless they get cocky and take over vast portions of the galaxy. NPC characters do the fighting for you. Boss Dominators can usually be killed in a few different ways. Either brute force, a virus, somekinda code, or whatever.

Minigames range from pretty good to retarded. The text adventures are cool, unless you get the odd one that makes no sense because of the bad translation. I'm in no way implying the translation from Russian to English is bad. There's only one instance (besides the hilarious intro movie) where I was left stumped. The robot RTS missions are silly and way too easy. All you need to do is build one amazing robot, switch to the third person view and play it like Mechwarrior. I skip the rts minigames entirely. Another minigame reminds me of those bonus stages from Sonic the Hedgehog. I think it's inside a black hole if I remember right.

Other things:
Lots and lots of customization. Many different alien civilizations with their own unique tech. Pirates. Trading. Exploring uninhabited planets. Asteroids effected by suns' gravities. Good music. Easy controls. Fun combat. Pissed off and friendly aliens. Stupid cutscenes. Easy to beat once you don't suck. Randomly generated galaxy for each game.

Maybe someone can enlighten me as to why they liked this game so much. I picked it up and spent several hours playing and couldn't even come close to getting into it.

The first thing i didn't like about the game was how hard it is to make money. You have to fly all over space and land on every planet to find "quests." I've spent 15 or 20 mins just looking for something to do and failing.

It is almost impossible to kill in space combat and if you do, it takes forever. Enemies can just land on planets or warp out and there isn't anything you can do to stop them.

Text based adventures + engrish don't mix.

It is just generally a slow moving game. It can take 5 minuets to go from the starting point of a quest to the ending point of a quest and all you see along the way are a few planets and stars. And unless you somehow stumble across the speical item that refuels your craft as you fly through space you can expect to stop every few jumps to refuel adding tons of time to your trip.

I didn't like the game and I really enjoyed Escape Velocity.

To be anywhere effective in combat you need at least 2 guns, one of them being rocket salvos in the beginning, and also a damage reducer, fighters start out with one that has a 15% damage reduction so that'll be pretty good.

I only have issues taking on the big guys and dominators so far so I pretty much just need more guns :P

Damage reduction and self repair are key though later on, get yourself a droid to repair in battle automatically so your bills aren't so big and you last significantly longer in battle because of it.

Also, invest in a research droid at the space station, plant it on an uninhabited planet and abandon it there for a few months in game, when you come back there should be a bunch of stuff laying around on the surface map that your droid has found.
