A Fallout-inspired post-apocalyptic RPG in space with an extreme focus on role-playing. Inch wide, miles deep - intentionally short yet surprisingly deep and branching adventure with multiple gameplay styles. Combat 100% optional.

Alright, sorry, but that's a refund for me.

I mean it looks to be a good game you just cannot except it to be Fallout. Non binary should not offend people so much tbh it is just to let people roleplay.

Tbh I'm not even mad, but I am frustrated that stuff like this took precedence over far more basic and important character creation aspects.

Does the player’s gender even affect the game at all? If that’s the case, might as well remove the ability to choose your gender altogether.

Actually, I just realized if you can’t name your character then there’s probably a lot of pronoun use in the dialogue. Here’s a thought: force the player character to be non-binary and go by they/them. That’ll piss people off.

I get it it just seemed like they cannot make Fallout they made what they could with the time/money they could. If Fallout came out in 2022 it would have the same dumb gender shit.

    Thanks for checking it out!

    Quick clarification/context:

    > No perks or traits

That is, indeed, true. We don't have perks or traits.

    marks-in-charsheet-cropped.gif

We have marks, though. But that's different.

    > Background is predefined as captain of the ship

    Wait a sec...

Aren't you a Vault Dweller in Fallout?
The Chosen One in Fallout 2?
    Courier in New Vegas?

Does that mean that these games are not good RPGs because of the predefined background?

    > Doesn't even ask you to name your character

Your character has a name. It's just that nobody cares about it.

    > No way to change appearance (not even just a picture like in Shadowrun)

Because superficial visuals is really the thing you are looking for in RPGs? Also, remind me, how many appearance options Fallout / Fallout 2 had? Did it limit the roleplaying options?

    > Option to set gender to non-binary is there though

    That is not gender.

In all seriousness, bought this game last night and though I haven’t played it much yet it seems pretty good for an indie game. Nice art style. Looking forward to playing with a Focus of 1.

Except none of those had any actual predefined background outside of a couple things and that's mostly the Chosen One. The Courier's background specially is left extremely open to the point you can even deny bringing the package to The Divide in Lonesome Road, basically the only concrete thing one could assume from their background outside of the fact that they got shot by Benny because of the Platinum Chip they were carrying.

I hate this discussion. Not everything has to be the same. Roleplaying is usually not that important anyway (outiside a LP) your options are often so limited nothing matters.

And we have it exactly like that in the game. 'Captain' is the reason why you are here, just like 'courier' is.

We have way less of your background than Ulysses and the whole deal with Divide implies in New Vegas.

Being a vault dweller, tribal or courier is a generic background, having grown up on a vault or a tribe just means you are a member of that group, but not what specific kind of member (you could be the literature nerd who reads lots of books, the tech wiz, the manipulative smooth talker, the handyman that repairs the machines, the dumb guy who can't even talk properly but is very good with a gun, the super muscular dude that is dangerous with a machete, etc...), whereas 'courier' is such a simple job that most people would be able to do it regardless their previous knowledge or physical aptitude; a character with that kind of background can plausibly have a very large combination of different personalities and skillsets that would still make sense to some degree. On the other hand, a captain is by definition someone that is supposed to have leadership skills and be a people person, so if you want to roleplay as a something like an aloof hacker, shy techie or schizoid gunman you are already somewhat in contradiction with the background the game picked for you. I wish I could have been a generic crew member instead, or even better; have your background be part of the character creation like in Mount and Blade, Cyberpunk and Tyranny.

And a name is generally a very important thing for a character. Nobody refers to your character by his name in Planescape Torment, but the developers still gave you an option to name him and there is even a very powerful moment at the ending related to "The Nameless One" remembering his own name.

And I remember the gender neutral option being a button right between the other two buttons with the '' and '' icons and saying 'male' and 'female' on the description. I don't know what else a player was supposed to interpret from that.

I think that's fair and well constructed feedback. It started out a bit negative earlier but this is a solid post. If I was the dev I'd take it onboard and consider it for future revisions of this title and other games.

I understand why you - without even superficially checking the game deeper - would assume so.

But the thing is, you are a 'captain' only on paper.

You have 0 experience. Nobody on the crew knows you, nobody respects you because this is your first day on the job and you've been "shoved in". You have an influential family that wanted you to be the captain however your own aspirations are left open. In fact, the 3 default game presets give you a hint of how diverse your character can be:

    upload_2022-12-12_10-1-21.png

    upload_2022-12-12_10-1-46.png

    upload_2022-12-12_10-2-32.png

Anyone could have been in your place, anyone could have been the captain here. And this is not just in the lore, this situation is reflected in the game.

And, before you say, "how would you even become captain without needed skills", I have an answer. You can - optionally - decide to "remember" your exam in Space Academy and this short episode shows how your character which can - potentially - not even speak to strangers or, who has zero charm - can pass the exam and become a captain. This playable episode is full of options to complete the exam in various ways - either by being competent or by cheating, using sneak, speech or whatever you can conjure in an open-ended manner.

Haven't you met people that have graduated best universities in the world but are incompetent as a brick?

Here, you may be a competent captain or an incompetent asocial creep, this is simply a situation your custom character is thrown into without consent.

    > name

Sure, that's a valid criticism. It is not important to me but if players think it is, it makes sense. That's what the EA is all about.

    > gender

Those are stereotypes. N - does not mean that you are not a "man", or that you are not a "woman". It means that you don't fit the "stereotypical image of a man or woman".

This is for NPCs to define how they see you. Women are charming, men are strong, if you don't agree, N.

Gameplay wise N gives you some variance. Some women would not talk to a macho man about their woman problems, however, N is not really regarded as a "man" so, you can have the same dialog options as another woman. On the other hand, at the same time, some "men" may consider you a "bro" even if you've chosen N.

For example "incel" type of character would be N, if this helps.
