[updated:LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-03 AT 04:33AM (GMT)]Alright first post, I think starting a good topic is better than any introduction. But rest assured I will try not to make any stupid remarks like a lot of idea-men. I have read a lot of threads and agree with pretty much all of what Roshambo Warrior says.

The following is a modest idea of how to possiblity help the turn-based system, post any problems and I will try (others can help) to think around them. But maybe the whole ideas are flawed.

I think turn-based is the best system for another Fallout game, it involves more strategy and creates tense moments when you wait to see how your character will hold out for another round.

What is annoying in Fallout's turn-base combat?

1. Spending time waiting for everyone in town to move around, large battles became cumbersome.

2. Out of view actions and being left in the dark.

3. Killing small pests.

Sugguestion, have group movements:

Computer would scan all the enemies; finds all characters that will just move in their turn; has them all move at the same time and arrive at the same place they would have normally.

Combat would still be turn by turn (attacking at same time has too many problems). All the enemies are at the same tile they would have been.

Possible problem: Traps were the only thing I can think of that would be affected. The way time works in turns could affect bomb timers (or whatever new weapons like mines that are added). But with more people moving you will probably have a higher chance of hurting more enemies.

View or speed up out of view actions:

Either let the camera move over to the actions (I don't see that big of a problem) or increase their speed as if the slider in options menu was turned up.

Actually count-down to when your turn starts:

No more wondering when your turn will come when people you can't see are moving around. Have something to tell you how the round is moving along.

Blend first attacks into game-time mode:

Have the option to bring up the attack cursor without entering combat mode (with percents and everything). When you click on an enemy it would like the first round (everything else would stop and the target would be hit), spend other AP doing whatever. If the target dies you come right out of combat and continue walking around, if not he starts his way over or attacks.

It would basically eliminate the annoyance of entering combat, killing one rat, then exiting. People mite prefer it to starting fights than entering combat mode first.

Or just speed up that damn combat mode window.

Most of the time critters don't move - they just stand and attack. Ever played X-Com? They skip animation of everyone who is not in your field of view. I think you should get acknowledgements like shots and death screams, but otherwise just save player's time by not processing out-of-screen animation.

Attacking? I thought the whole thing was still turn-based, only animation is for everyone...

Like X-Com 3's (IIRC) hidden movement counter? Neat!

Minor gameplay patches. With Urquhart's recent announcement I don't think any of it will be considered when making FO3 either.

Yeah, Fear-Gut MacD'Hurrquart seems to have a marketing twit's hand up his ass to puppet him. He obviously doesn't see that the only reason why Real-Time seems to be popular is because of game mechanics like Diablo and other popular games, despite that Turn-Based stil does have a market, even moreso now that everyone is trying to clone off the same damn template. Diablo sold well, most Diablo clones did not.

It's when gaming is in the hands of developers like this, you either wish their development house would die already or they might get someone WITH a clue. There's a reason why Interplay is going down the tubes. Making/publishing crap games with crap support plays a big role in it.
