Spoilerific New Vegas question

Does anyone know at which point in the various quests the player gets locked in the endgame cascade? I know that Wildcard quests are always available and I don't plan to do any of the Legion ones, but I'm still undecided between House, NCR and the Yes Man. Therefore I'd like to know how far the questline can I travel while working for House or the NCR before I'm stuck between that faction and the Yes Man alone.

After protecting the President(or killing him) there is this last optional(or not, depends) quest. After doing that and reporting back end game quest begins at the dam and you can't go back.
You can do the last quest and not report, finish what you want to finish and then report and start end game.

You can work for both House and the NCR until reporting to House after dealing with the Omertas in the quest How Little We Know, then he will ask you to destroy the BoS bunker, that's the trigger for the NCR don't accepting your help anymore. The same goes for the NCR, after dealing with the Omertas your next task is kill House in the quest For the Republic, so you have to choose a side based on this.
Until reporting to one of them, you still can work with House and complete NCR missions, for example.

You should try to work for House, NCR AND Legion at the same time, there's a way to do it without being excluded for one of the factions.
It's challenging and very fun.

Care to explain? :wiggle:

For example, if you ask for the Boomer support during Render Unto Caesar, you will gain massive NCR infamy. If you aren't at least liked with them, your reputation will turn to shunned or worst and NCR personnel will shot you on sight. But asking for Boomer support renders a lot of Legion fame, wich in turn makes you liked with them (if you are playing as a woman this is important, since you can't fight in the arena). So you ask for Boomer support, report to Caesar, gain NCR infamy, then go to the Ambassador and do the Boomers quest for NCR, reseting your status with them (actually it won't bet reseted, you will have the lowest possible helpfull "good" status, Good Natural Rascal. From this level of reputation you can do good deeds until becoming again liked or idolized).
Or do the quest "Booted" for Boone, while trying to maintain a neutral reputation with Legion (this is a no brain strategy, tell Boone to wait at Ulysses ranch, use a stealth boy to kill all the legionaries at the camp - and collect their ears! - then go back and bring Boone to free the prisioners).

Or do the quest We Are Legion before going to the Fort without failing Return to Sender, Medical Mistery and No, Not Much.
It's easy now that I know what to do, but at first you have to plan your steps carefully.

One thing I like to do is planting the bug at Cottonwood Cove for Astor, then asking for Aurelius trade NCR dogtags for supplies, then going with Boone to the overlook and kill only him without a stealth boy and without gainning Legion infamy, for Boone's points on his quest.
Ok, this last part doesn't count, it's a personal challenge I impose myself.

Killing Silus for Boone's point is lame, I love listen Caesar complains about him (that's why I kill Mr. House before gave him the Platinum Chip if siding with Yes Man, the note he gives you is very funny).

But you got the idea.

Yeah it's possible. Also i got to say, Yes Man is available all the way until the last near end quest. He is the other House anyway so switching to him is easy, just kill the old bastard. Everything else gives you tons of exp, NCR or Legion.

Someday Im going to try that.

Cesar is very forgiving when you first meet him (even though i killed 200 of his minions), but mind it when you get to his camp first he will take that chip from you and will not return it when you go away. If you go to the Bunker entrance and enter it the guards won't let you out until you finish the job, whatever you decide to do.

Thank you everyone for your responses, I appreciate it. It's my first playthrough and I've done most of the game blind but once I reached The Strip I kept worrying that I'd get shoved into particular endgame path without warning and since I don't know when I'll have time for another run I really didn't want that to happen.

For instance I got How Little We Know very early, before either House or NCR asked me to do it so I've dispatched Cachino (on account of that prostitute I saved telling me what a sick bastard he was) and then continued working for the bosses expecting to be given an option to stab them in the back at some point but then I go to hand the quest in and get slammed with negative Strip and karma penalty. Seems Cachino was the lesser evil and like I'll have to annihilate them all and not just the bosses now.

brfritos, ever since Nipton I've been shooting Legion on sight and that's not likely to change in this game. Well, maybe I'll talk to Cesar when I visit The Fort and then go medieval on their ass but that's as far as my "cooperation" with them will go.

Nah, don't worry. The game warns you when doing one more quest for a certain faction will bind you irreversibly to that faction. And later, as someone pointed out, the game will warn you again when accepting the next quest will lock you in the final part of the game.
