Stalker

Moved it to General Gaming Discussion, but left the shadow here (TO). Hope you don't mind, CC.

" Plot Summary: Near a gray and unnamed city is The Zone, an alien place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers. "

...

Didn't know those guys based most of their game on a Tarkovsky movie.
Of course, Tarkovsky couldn't introduce any Chernobyl elements into his movie, as the accident happened in 1986.

Ok... this looks good... I've watched the movie and read the book, and they were great. The movie was a bit dull at times but i still liked it.
BTW who wrote the book Stalker? Strugarki or summink?

"Stalker" , which is in turn based on the 1972 novel "Piknik na obochinie" (The picnic at the side of the road) by the Strugacki brothers, Arkadij and Boris

BTW Wouldn't it be nice if threads were named to be, y'know, somewhat self-explanatory ???....

Wich is in turn based on "wilk i zając" (nupakadij, zajec!)

There is some alpha code of that game circling around, only a tech-demo really, but it's supposed to be the (technically) best most people have seen...

Upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. : Shadows of Chernobyl

For those of you who aren't familiar with this upcoming title it is also based on post-apoc setting but is a FPS. So far it looks pretty promising. Its release date was pushed back till Janurary 2nd however but when it does come out it should be nice.

The player assumes the role of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which is pretty much a freelance mercenary which collects artifacts from inside the ZONE which is the radiated area. Artifacts are objects with extreme radioactivity which you can exchange for weapons, suit upgrades and rubles. Either way if you're into the post-apoc type of games its certainly a game to check out. If you've done some research on it feel free to post your ideas on it. :)

O geez lol how many years have they been developing it anyhow? I know when it comes out it supposed to put a new all-time standard for FPS's. Either way I can't wait :).

I think the game looks very interesting and potentially fun... but man, just the MINIMUM system requirements are probably double my current system.

"Stalker" was invented by Strugatsky brothers. I didn't like the movie based on their book, but the book itself was superb (all Strugatsky books are). I read it in russian and I don't know if translated version is as good as original. English version can be bought from Amazon: title "Piknik na obochinie" is translated as "Roadside Picnic".
