I am just wondering if anyone knows what is happening to Static?

At http://www.static-thegame.com/, the last update was on the 15th of April (I think). So what is happening? Is it in development or was it put on hold or something? I dunno, maybe they changed sites, if so please reply and tell me.

I have never heard of this game, but I just saw some screenshot over that website. It looks damn great, wondering if it's a Fallout-type game.

I remember, do you remember the game "Static" that was in demo phase when some of us over at Vault 13 caused some huge cross-site trolling and maybe helped in tanking the game

Why the fuck would you do that? That demo was great.

I didnt, I was just saying the word "us" in relation to us as a community, afterall, we should own up to our own involvement...even if it was just being there and not saying NO...

As I remember it, the team was hoping to win in the IGF, and use the winnings to further finance the game. Unfortunately, Static didn't win a single category. In addition, they had failed to engage the interest of any publisher and had no financing that way. Shortly after that, the team disbanded.

Diarmada, you are thinking of the Biobuddy. Actually, as I remember it, your character falls through a crumbling floor, and awakes next to a damaged Biobuddy robot left in a corner. You take the head, which serves as your GUI for the rest of the game. The mind control device controlling you is damaged in the fall, and you have no memories of the instillation you are in. I saved some sketches and screenshots from the old website. I wish I still had the version I was beta testing for them, but the hard drive it was on died.

Yeah, the Bio-Buddy, what a great notion...I remember thinking that they made a big splash over at IGF the year before, I guess when they came back with a more completed product, it was dumpsville...I was one of the player-testers as well, as I remember a lot of us at Vault 13 were...well a few at least...but maybe that was just for the demo, I dunno...

My memory serves a new master, forgetfulness...

But here is a few of the pieces I have left from Static, not quite as compelling as yours, but still something I thought was worth saving....

Hmm... I only remember one other tester other than me, testing the larger, private version of the game and using the bug reporting system on their website. Came complete with a special avatar on their forums.

Anyway, I have a few more things, I only uploaded stuff that showcased the BioBuddy. I will see about uploading the rest to the NMA gallery for posterity.

ha yeah i remeber seeing the screeon shots, wow too bad it fell through for them, seemes like it could have been a really neat game to play :( anybody out there have the demo ?

eh your probably right, I do remember them asking us to play the demo and some other stuff and provide feedback.....but it matters little to me now, as it went the way of so much....to the wastes

I believe the public tech-demo is is available on FilePlanet.

Also, I split and moved this thread.

Edit: Well, I tested the demo, and it works. Strangely, it wasn't available on FilePlanet for a while, but it seems to be back.

Also, you might want to check out our Static Gallery. I have uploaded all the Static art I still possess, and also included some of Diarmada's contributions.

They had some fantastic artwork. I offered to let them use my engine about a year after their team dissolved, but Bill (the leader) wouldn't compromise on the 3D Open GL critters and I couldn't get it to work with the big bitmaps and Open GL. So that was it for the project.

If only they had been willing to compromise and use 2D pre-rendered critters, things could have been different.

The last I heard (and that was years ago), Bill was working for a AAA company and was sleeping at the office so he could meet his deadlines.

I played the demo when it was published on one of the CDs with a local game magazine. I actually didn't like it because I thought it was ripping off Fallout too much. What can I say, I was a dumbass way back then.
I recently installed the demo again and nearly started banging my head against the wall thinking what kind of an idiot I've been. Not that my appreciation of the game earlier would contribute in any way, but it still made me wonder what would have happened if its potential was discovered by more people on time.
*sigh* It's a real shame...

Merged with ye olde Static thread.

Not that this is the avatar thread, but give me one reason for not sporting that :)

Here is a link to one of the in-game videos if anyone wants to download it (around 10meg): Link
