Stealth Boy ticket to painful death?!

Well, I am just as surprised to find out this info as you are to read the subject. I was wearing my Stealth Boy in FO2 when suddenly, my body flew appart in bite size kibble. At first I thought a mutant arrated me with a minigun, but I was in town where that cant happen. Then I reload the game and I put my SB back on and my game performs an illegal operation. Is this a techie problem or should I just not use stealth boy?
