Stuck in Military Base. No way out?

The Kotex Kid

First time out of the vault
I'm in a bit of a pickle. It seems I can't leave the 2nd level of the base. I've wasted all the stupid mutants (Marcus met his demise here. Oh Marcus, had you only stayed Sheriff in Broken Hills...). I liberated a suit of antique T-51B power armor and now the elevator wont work. I've tried running in and out of it several times, using the use hand from the mouse menu, nothing works.

Am I stuck like this? If so I'm pretty pissed.

EDIT: Crap, sorry double post, meant to edit my previous one.

I remember getting myself into exactly that same pickle at one point. I also remember how I did it. I did it by going to the second level from the "town map", not the elevator, before I had the power on. You need to fix the generator before you can safely visit any level but the first. Reload an earlier save, (you *did* use multiple slots, didn't you???) repair the generator (lights will come on) and try to keep Marcus alive. If you've got "psycho" in your inventory, and you don't' need it yourself, I strongly advise shooting him up with it. It will *vastly* increase his combat potential!

I repaired the generator when I saw it, and then used the elevator to to access the 2nd floor. Still, what should keeping Marcus alive have to do with me not getting out of the second level, unless you mean just because he kicks ass.

I did use multiple slots, but those slots are much, MUCH older than this current one and I don't feel like losing that much progress. Looks like I get to uninstall FO2 now. Fucking waste of time.

Let this be a lesson.

Save early, save often.

You enter a new town, save.

You finish something, save.

You have gas, save.

Still doesn't beat my first save file in Fallout 2:
Load a different game, quicksave resets so you need to select the slot again.
Start a new game, quicksave does not reset so it overrides 20+ hours of progress.

That taught me to archive save :?.

Quicksave?

I didn't even know it had that option. Doesn't matter, I wouldn't have used it anyway.

I remember when I put a warning about that in my guides, thinking something like "yeah, like that would ever happen to anyone anyway".

It is indeed hard to sleep at night.

Sigh, it was one of the reasons I hated Fallout 2 for so long.

Edit: Wow Per, you wrote that awesome FAQ that saved my life a million times over. Thanks! :D

I went ahead and reverted back to my previous save, which was about two months older in game time. It didn't take too long to get back to where I was, and now magically the elevator works. I made it down to the 3rd level only to find more difficult mutants than on the 2nd level.

I suggest saving in a diffren't slot after ever combat sequence.

No shit.

Sorry to be rude, but most of us figured that out.......................years ago.......

Actualy, most of us figured it out in a previous centruy :p

My habit is to make an archived save at the start of every major location and keep a single quicksave slot. Game-stopping bugs like this one are very rare (unless you count the too many items bug). I applaud your decision to persevere, although sadly you don't exactly have the best parts of the game ahead of you.
