stupid question: I dont know how to use ammo!

I have tons of ammo: AP, etc, and I havent found the way to use it: for example, make the 10mm submachine gun use AP ammo. Does it requires more advanced weapons or simply Im not looking in the right place?

Just press "2" with the weapon in hand, that should cycle ammo types.

If you're using a console I believe the directional pad button "up" will cycle ammo types while you have the weapon drawn.

When you have a weapon equipped, you can also go to the "ammo" screen in the PIP Boy and select the ammo you want to use.

For the PC, pressing "2" will swap ammo types when the gun is drawn.
