First time out of the vault
Hi everyone, first-time poster here, just hoping to get some advice. I recently played Brotherhood of Steel on the X-Box and thought it was great. I've never played the Fallout games on the PC (my PC is pretty old), but after Brotherhood of Steel I'm really keen to give them a shot!

Where does everyone recommend I start? I heard there's another Fallout tactics game on the PC - is this a port of Brotherhood of Steel, or a different game?

Chances are, if you liked Fallout: POS for the consoles, then you wouldn't like the PC games. They aren't mindless crackhead shooters.

How about with the first one, since that's kind of the point of a series?

Well, since it came out about 4 years before the console title...I'd think not.

I do like traditional old-school RPGs as well, particularly Diablo, Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, City of Heroes, etc. Are the PC games more like these?

Well I think a friend of mine has Fallout Two which he might let me borrow - is this a good starting point? Will my gameplay suffer if I haven't played the first one? Is the storyline easy to understand out of context?

ok if you have only played the console games then I feel sorry for you that you had to experince fallout that way.

what you need to do is go on Ebay and look for second hand fallout cds should be able to pick one up for under $10.
it would be best story wise to play fallout first then you will understand what is happening and relate to characters and towns that appear in Fo2.

it would be like watching the matrix 2 before the first, you would have no idea WTF is going on.

This crap should be framed.

1. Diablo, Final Fantasy, and TES are NOT "traditional old-school RPGs", which are typically represented in a P&P style, from where the genre took its roots. This list includes Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, before each of them got assfucked by some moron in marketing to appeal to the Lowest Common Denominator.
2. Diablo, Final Fantasy, and TES are NOT CRPGs. Diablo is Action/Adventure, Final Fantasy is Adventure, and TES is Action/Adventure/Dungeon Crawler. The first true CRPG is Ultima IV (which is true, as even Wizardry was just a dungeon crawler for some time, and the core genre was Adventure), for having the world reflect your actions back to you aside from combat.
3. City of Heroes is a MMORPG. What the fuck it has ever to do with "traditional old-school RPGs" is beyond my understanding. Freedom Force, which might have been a bit more relevant, is still a strategy game more than a role-playing game.
4. Fallout is an old-school CRPG in every meaning of the term.

Well I think a friend of mine has Fallout Two which he might let me borrow - is this a good starting point? Will my gameplay suffer if I haven't played the first one? Is the storyline easy to understand out of context?

Well, given that you list "Diablo" as an old-school RPG, then you'll probably enjoy Fallout 2, and not notice the crappier story, crappier setting, and you might enjoy many of the crap easter eggs as they're only funny if you haven't seen them a hundred times before. Plus the story and setting, just like with Diablo and the other games (in particular F:POS), are pretty much irrelevant and subservient to the gameplay.

Do you really start a book trilogy with Book Two?

Of course, it might be a better idea to lurk on a forum before you post and not expect people to just spoon-feed you answers, as so far you're typical of everything we've expected to enjoy Chuck's assrape of the Fallout setting.

Thank you for your informative and enjoyable post! I'll keep an eye out for Fallout, as it seems to be the consensus that this is the best to start with.

But really, what is funny if you've seen it one hundred times before?

Also, You mention "assfucking" and "assrape" alot on your post - sorry to let you know I don't swing that way (but I might be interested if you're cute). ;)

"Trilogies" are the purview of pulp fantasy and other lowbrow schlock, and thus not really my thing.

You're right, which still mystifies me as to why the fuck BIS decided to use them.

Ah, then you might be happy to note that Fallout was as if written by a 50's science fiction author, but with a pulpish feel to it.

Per, I love your System Shock references.

Brecht, you have walked into a place, where people are loyal to Fallout 1, which set up the whole setting, history and feel to the game. We are very opinionated people, pissed off to no end by Fallout 2 medium quality, Fallout Tactics killing Fallout 3 for a quick buck and aforementioned Fallout: Piece of (PS2) Shit, which ultimately murdered any chances of Fallout 3 seeing daylight.

As such, it is highly advised that you throw away shallow console gaming and undertake Fallout 1. A true cRPG, a classic, and for people who can think and aren't the lowest-common-denominator as mr Deathclaw pointed out.

It is important to note, that Fallout 1 is canon, while FO:POS is not, due to several thousand contradictions, including the portrayal of BoS.

After you have played Fallout 1 thoroughly, understood it setting and FOR GOD'S SAKE LURKED THE FORUMS!, you may return.

PS: And really, don't piss Roshambo off. He is an experienced CRPG developer, dedicated NMA admin and a Fallout veteran. He is definitely NOT the person on whose bad side you want to be.

Vault Kitten, don't be so rude with him.

He was pretty nice even if he's on the Dark Side of Fallout. He has no idea how great Fallout 1 is. It's like a life full of masturbating.... and then u meet a nice hot girl and start playing Fallout 1... or so... I hope u get the point! :D

And Roshambo was always such a nice guy. I've never seen him raging! (maybe that's because I'm that what b00nz concider a NOOB.)

Brecht, play Fallout 1 mate... for GOD SAKES!

Well I can appreciate the aesthetics of pulp sci-fi for kitsch value, but it's not necessarily what I look for in literature.

And thanks for the suggestions guys - I'm sure someone in my circle of friends will have the first Fallout; and if not there's always EBay.

I sugest something like this.

It includes all fallout games availible for the pc.

Deffinitely start with Fallout 1. Better story line, sets the scene, has a good element of survival, more mature enviroment.

(my PC is pretty old)

Fallout and Fallout 2 run great on a P2 300 with 32 MB RAM... You don't need Core 2 Duo to play it. (Unless you have a really ancient rig). 64MB RAM is recommand to run Fallout 2 for better loading time.

As for Fallout tactics, it's a squad-based strategy game with minor fallout element. Good game but not the Fallout game we like.

And stay away from F:POS... Really.

Fallout and Fallout 2 run great on a P5 133 with 32 MB RAM. Fallout will perform nicely with only 16 MB RAM, but Fallout 2 may become nigh unplayable in large areas like New Reno. I'm actually willing to bet that a beefy 486 would run Fallouts without problems.

Sound sometimes gets funky, but it's very playable.

Er, not that I still have a 486 around or anything. *eyeshift*

I will never forgive Interplay for making me play through and complete BOS, never.... even though oddly enough I've been feeling the urge to play it again... ok ok so I don't hate it that much, it is a sacrilage to the Fallout name though, that aside, I like the mindlessness of it, just a good time while jammin out to Slipknot and other such acts on the soundtrack.

Anyway, to the point, Fallout and Fallout 2 might work for you but do me one favor, DON'T KILL EVERYONE YOU SEE!

I introduced Fallout to a friend of mine who is rabid over Diablo 2 and he keeps getting his ass handed to him by Shady Sands because he insists on killing everyone... guh...

If you have to kill them, they will try to kill you first... just saying.
