Super-Mutant weapons(spoilers, possibly)

Okay, I finally decided to try out the super-mutants in my recruit pool, specifically the one named Toni because I needed someone good with energy weapons. Anyway, I give her a plasma rifle, but for some reason it's red and it says "Cannot Use", even when it's loaded. So I says, "Okay, well let's try the laser rifle, super-mutants in FO2 were blasting the crap out of me with those..."
Nope. Laser rifle is also red and "Cannot Use". So I'm wondering what is the deal? Are super-mutant fingers too big for these weapons? She can hold a vindicator just fine, but that's not exactly an energy weapon. What energy weapons can super-mutants use? I haven't tried them all...but help will be appreciated.

In fallout tactics, super-mutants can only
use "big guns", as far as ranged weapons
goes (possibly thrown, but who cares really).

Yes, it sucks.

Yes, it's been mentioned before.

Yes, the supermutants in FO/FO2 used energy weapons.

Hmm. Dang. Another casualty of odd race/skill combinations I suppose... x_X
