It Wandered In From the Wastes
Gamespy posted up an interview with new Sega AM2 head Makoto Osaki.
http://www.gamespy.com/interviews/january04/am2/index.shtml

The best part, hands down, is the end of the interview.

GameSpy: Speaking of time and money spent in development, and since you voiced an interest in FPS games, what do you think about the ongoing Duke Nukem Forever saga?

Mr. Osaki: Oh? What's the latest on that?

GameSpy: Well, it's been seven years since Take-Two announced it, and it's still not out yet. What are your thoughts on that?

Mr. Osaki: SEVEN YEARS!?

[*turns to the PR person beside him*]

You know, Shenmue only took us FIVE.

[*The room reverberates with laughter*]•

Here's something that perked me up.

GameSpy: Xbox ports of the Chihiro games (VC3, Outrun 2, etc.) have been ruled out in Japan, however, since the Chihiro hardware is very close to the Xbox. Do you think you could port these games for foreign markets (where the Xbox is performing better)?
Mr. Osaki: Hmmm, well, you know, we're actually really scared of the rental markets that exist in the West. (Game rentals do not exist in Japan - ed.) You see, games like Outrun 2 and VC3 are really designed with arcade play in mind. They're something you put your coins in and amuse yourself with for a little while. This arcade-centric design idea is different from something like GTA3, which was made to keep you playing at home for long periods at a time. As a result, you could probably just rent the games, play them a bit until you're done, say "That was fun," and take them back. This would no doubt cut into potential sales.

Still, the Xbox is doing very well in the West. A port from Chihiro to the Xbox probably wouldn't be too difficult. But we'd need to get input from the Western Sega branches (SoE, SoA) first before we make any decisions.

So, he's worried about the rental stores? I thought that the Xbox Grand Theft Auto Double Pack was one of the highest rented games last year, and also one of the biggest sellers. So, all I need to do is bang the monkeys at Sega of America. They have one piece of the puzzle together when they decided to price Sega GT Online at $20: there's no reason why Virtua Cop 3 and Out Run 2 can't do well with a similar price point. Also, Sega has a good habit of putting out game sequels with previous games in the series hidden as Easter eggs: House of the Dead 3 had House of the Dead 2, and the original Panzer Dragoon was included with Panzer Dragoon Orta. Sega can just put in Virtua Cop 1 and/or Virtua Cop 2 with Virtua Cop 3, along with a Point Blank-style training scenario mode (one like the training mode in House of the Dead 2), to jack up the replay value. And the original 1986 Out Run and it's sequels (Turbo Out Run, OutRunners) can be included with Out Run 2, along with a new course and a driving school mode.

OK, rant over. Have a nice day. 8)

Speaking of being the Sega whore, I picked up Sega GT Online today. I'll give some first impressions over the weekend.

I wish we had more arcades in the US. The arcade here sucks!

That's something I really miss. Going to the arcade and blowing numerous quarters on "Lethal Enforcers" ...Did anyone else ever play that? That was a badass game!

Holy crap, there's possibly one of the best arcade games at a local mall around here. The game is called Tokyo Tank Wars. You sit in this hydraulic contraption which is like the cockpit of a tank. It moves and jerks around and shakes you around like a bitch when you fire tank shells. Its one hell of a game.

When I went to Spain they had some rad arcardes in their malls.

One machine was like a helicoptor cockpit. You got in and the windows and windshield turned into video screens. You were flying around Tokyo, and the person next to you (on the screen of course) was helming a giant machine gun. You fly around for a while then out pops Godzilla! You start to attack him, dodging flaming breath, etc, while the machine spins you around and tosses you. In the finale he bats you down with his hand and you actually feel like you're crashing.

So awesome.

On the ferry from Belgium to England I've played a fantastic arcade game... It's pretty basic, but you had this mean lookin' sniper rifle, made after the Barret, and a really big screen. When you popped your Euro into the slot, the screen turned into a big-ass landscape, which could actually rotate 360°... God, that was great...

If I remember correctly, the heads of your enemies also exploded if you pwnd them.

Must've blown at least fifteen euros at that game...

Did anyone ever play "Operation Wolf"? You know, the game with the two machine guns, you shot down guerillas as they popped out at you?

Maybe someone should split this and make it an arcade thread. Montez?

I hated that game - I would always run out of ammo right as I got to the point where you start getting swarmed by enemies.

I'm such a lousy shot.

I think you're referring tp Silent Scope.

Awwwm man, I'm glad most people here love arcade games, it's the only reason why I still buy consoles, although emulators have made the PC the gaming machine of choice when it comes to playing arcade games... ;)

Now what are your favorite arcade fighting games. Mines has to be Street Fighter 3: Second Strike and Soul Calibur (DC version was way superior to the arcade version interestingly enough).

On a sidenote, if you guys love arcade games, then you should all do yourselves a favor and gbuy a Dreamcast. Some of the best arcade ports can be found on this great console. Not only that, but they're dirt cheap right now. They currently go for $30 at my local game store.

I never got into arcade fighting games. I always got owned.

Mortal Kombat 2 was the only one I was good at. Oh, and Street Fighter 2 - Championship Edition.

I kick ass at Mortal Kombat - Deadly Alliance for the PS2, though. Great game.

Dreamcasts rock. I need to find one...

They don't run any commercial games yet, and if they did, it would be horrendously slow.

Plus, there's the problem of your optical drive reading a GD-Rom disk, so pretty much your best bet is to use a dreamcast and maybe download some of the games that can be burned onto CD's.

Well, since this turned into an arcade-related thread, I might as well chime in.
I have two arcades within a 30 minute drive from me- one that is literally a stone's throw from my college, and one that's on the corner of I-95 and Sterling Road that has a wooden rollercoaster. The wooden rollercoaster one has Virtua Cop 3- I went in on free play day (every Tuesday and Thursday, just pay $10 and go crazy in the arcade) and just spent about an hour or two on it, stomping on the pedal to activate E-S Mode (bullet time) and literally shoot down bullets shot at me. Both arcades have version 2 of Initial D: Arcade Stage. I already built up a Lancer Evo III, and I'm doing another one- this time yellow, manual transmission, and the first parts course, the one with the misfiring system. I really wish that Sega would just give us Americans the PS2 version that Japanese gamers have been enjoying for several months- mabye Tokyopop is fucking with them, or mabye they want to base the U.S. version on the upcoming version 3. Then there are the usual suspects- Daytona USA, Super GT, Time Crisis, House of the Dead, Silent Scope, et. al...
