system hangs when entering NCR

I was just playing & minding my own business, but when I left New Reno and tried to enter New California Republic the mouse pointer (shaped like a globe with a rocket around it) stops turning and the game doesn't continue anymore. What can I do?
 
Does this happen all the time ? I would try and reinstall it, and remember to patch it afterwards... (but not if you want to use the savegames you've got)...

Same savegame ? Try reloading an earlier savegame..

Tried that too, by the way, I lost my crew (sullik, vic) while screwing one of the daughters of a New Reno bigshot. I was done, pulled my pants up and never saw them again. Not in reno or anywhere else. But I'm more concerned about NCR.
