Did everyone read this, I didn't know that System Shock 2 was that "randomly" made.. Oh and here's the hawt stuff:
which would go on to develop a game called System Shock 2--a game we'll take a retrospective look at in anticipation of Irrational's next project, which we'll reveal to you exclusively tomorrow. (Here's a hint: it will likely please fans of System Shock 2.)
Naaaaice, let it beee so..

VERYYYYY NNNNICE.

Good news, good news...

Looks like we're going to have some good things to look forward to.

1) Troika's PA game (hopefully)
2) System Shock 3 (hopefully)
3) Fallout 3 (If Beth can pull it off).

Damn it, I've been refreshing gamespot every half-hour since 6 am and still no story. They better not be teasing us!

I think the cover price is around $10-15 dollars, I'll confirm it when I get home. It's not out of print or a collectable, so any comic or book shop that has graphic novels should have it or be able to order it for you.

Edit: Looks like $20 cover price: Amazon Listing

I have to admit I'm kind of disappointed its not SS3, but damn it sounds pretty good. If Irrational can do as good a job with it as the did with SS2 I'm sold.

Ahh! Hmm..let me read some about it first..

Ok let's start off, haven't the whole genetic secret lab been used to death already?

And the whole plasmids aren't something new (just a new name for it), neither is the interface not cluttering up the screen. It sounds interesting tho, but one of the things I liked about System Shock 2 was the whole ghosts walking and the voices from the enemies which I don't recon will be in this game.

This may be an unpopular opinion... but from the screenshots I've seen and the things I've read.
To me it almost looks just as interesting as a System Shock 3.
I know we can all read, but I am going to copy&paste a few things that really stuck out to me.

"BioShock, a new game that will attempt to further the open-ended, emergent gameplay of the previous games"

That will be a tough promise to deliver on. But if you look at the games their programmers/designers have created, I believe they have the talent to deliver.

"horror-themed gameplay experience in which what you observe, and what happens to you, will be tempered by your own choices."

Minus the horror-themed part, this is one of the main things we've been persistantly nagging Bethesda about. Your choices change things in the world that you can, see and feel the impact of.

"If you can capture exceptionally clear photos of specific creatures, you'll actually be able to expose their weaknesses."

Clever.

"BioShock has been in design for some three years now,"

Reassuring.
------------------------------------
Good comes with bad, though.
Like what's with the Plasmid system? Sounds kind of dumb and restricting. Why not use a real RPG system? Or RPG system+Plasmid system.
That brings up another point... there was no mention of any kind of RPG system. So is it mainly going to be FPS+Plasmid implants?
That reminds me a little too much of Deus Ex 2. A memory I don't want to remember...
-----------------------------------
Aside from my above ramblings, I'm still excited for the game.

Agreed, that part didn't appeal to me too much.

See, I'm thinking that since they really emphasize the horror aspect and go out of their way to connect the game with SS2 that it is going to contain elements like that, and that they just don't want to give too much away in a preview and spoil the game. Hopefully, at least.

It also sounds like they aren't going to go the route Ion Storm did with Deus Ex 2 (ie, removing features to the games detriment), which is a big relief.

I'd hate to point out the obvious, but "the previous games" were fairly linear, almost a line. Just like with Freedom Force. Irrational needs to lean what open-ended before they use it again.

However, they can make linear fun, while others can make open-ended seem like a few concentric rings of Hell Incarnate playing through said game once.

"horror-themed gameplay experience in which what you observe, and what happens to you, will be tempered by your own choices."

Essentially, this really says nothing, but it's constructed in a way to lead people to assumptions. Disappointing, really, as I hadn't figured Irrational for using such marketing garbage.

Finally, aside from the limited plasmid swapping problem (possibly an annoyance unless they balance it well, SS2's stations were not annoying, and it reeks of the save scheme of Daikatana). I really hope Irrational hasn't caught the stupidity disease from Spector.

"If you can capture exceptionally clear photos of specific creatures, you'll actually be able to expose their weaknesses."

Fuck this Pokémon Snap noise.

One of the captions for the screens said it uses a version of the tribes: vengence engine, i have the demo and when you exit the game and it has that little advertisement screen it says its an enhanced unreal engine.

"If you can capture exceptionally clear photos of specific creatures, you'll actually be able to expose their weaknesses."

"So there I was, stuck in this ancient Nazi genetic laboratory, surrounded on all sides by ungodly, nightmarish freaks whose only goal was to kill me and extract my DNA, and I thought to myself - 'If I don't snap some pictures I'll never forgive myself. My buddy Joe will be so jealous too, all he's got is that blurry shot of Bigfoot.' Of course survival was also on my mind, but come on, you've got to sieze these kind of opportunities when they come, am I right?"

For some reason, I'm actually a bit glad it's not SS3. Don't get me wrong: System Shock were great games, but if they made another one it'd suck to heavens.

Why? Because the SS story has been all but milked out. Honestly, SS2's was already quite lame if you look at it objectively, and if they'd bring SHODAN back from electronica limbo once again I think I'd cry.

Right, spoilers ahead, though I've tried to minimize the damage.

Remember the ending of System Shock 2? It would be disappointing to see the series end in a cliff-hanger. Assuming that the next installment wouldn't be terrible, I think they could make another quality game, though of course the likelihood would be against it. Don't want to post rampant spoilers, but think about your comment Jebus, would they really have to?

I for one was disappointed after waking up and checking gamespot first thing in the morning... The setting doesn't sound appealing (how the fuck can anyone get it in their minds to make ANOTHER game involving nazis?), and i think it's character development options will probably be simpler than System shock's (kinda like Deus-ex 2 to Deus-ex). Of course, that doesn't mean it's gonna be a bad game, just worse then all it could have been if they said "System shock 3 and it will have so many fucking attributes, skills and items you'll have to run 1600x1200 just so the tooltips can fit into your screen"

This game seems really interesting in my opinion. Both the concept and the game mechanics could be extremely cool if executed in a decent way. Have you seen the dev interview? He goes on about some seemingly great things there. Sounds like this game might have soul. I'm gonna keep my eyes on it.
