Tactics crashes when I click any option on the main menu

First time out of the vault
I searched a great deal and couldn't find a solution, or a mention of a similar problem. As the topics says, the game crashes a few seconds after I select anything on the main menu. The intro movies play fine. The sound is superb. I get a one of the completely uphelpful windows errors comprising of bos.exe has cause and error, etc.

I've patched to 1.27. I've applied the patch for the error with cd 3. I've done most things mentioned in this forum to solve problems I haven't had yet. Any insights are appreciated.

this is a very serious problem, I hope someone discovers the answer before its too late!

It would help if you posted the error message, and your system specs, also what language version do you have etc.

You haven't said but did you get the same problem before you started applying any patches? Uninstall, delete your FOT folder and then reinstall and see if the basic game works first before you apply any patches.

I've tried running it without the patch, fresh install. This is the error message and the cause(clicking a menu button):
bos.png

bos2.png

I get to the next screen after clicking single player(or anything for that matter), then it crashes.
I've done a small, medium and full install. Deleting my FOT folder after each uninstall.

System Specs:
1.0ghz Athlon Tbird
512mb ram
Windows XP no service packs.
Direct X 8.0a(FOT's the first game I've installed since a recent windows reinstall)

I've ample diskspace. Could my virtual memory settings be causing problems? The paging file size was set Min: 768 Max: 1024. I've just set it to the system managed option and there was no change.

All I can think of is uninstall, delete the FOT folder, re-install and make sure you are using the latest video/sound card drivers and latest direct x. Also make sure your gui_0.bos has installed properly, it should be 13,509KB.

No luck with any of that, but disabling my soundcard worked. Which sucks. So, now that it's a sound error, I'll see what I can do about it. If anyone has any suggestions I'll be checking back with my progress. Thanks for your help thusfar, requiem.

What kidna sound card do you have? is it built onto mobo or pci slo

EDIT:I dunno where you are but if your close to Houston Tx I have a couple extra old SB-32's (edit:they might be 16's dunno... but its better than nothing dont u think :) ) or some turtle beach 7.1 junk my dad got rid of when he upgraded to a Auidgy if you dont mind a drive. All free if you want to meet with me localy here somewhere, public place if you think I'm gonna eat you or sompthing :P :D

Gl on this though.

Well, disabling the soundcard worked until character creation, then it crashed after selecting one. So, I patched to 1.27, and came back to my initial problem WITH the sound card disabled. So, my solution was short lived. It still probably is a soundcard error, but I've no idea what the solution is.

Sytxferryman, I have an SB live platinum 5.1 that's about 4 years old. I've been having an increasing number of problems with it, so I think this is the last straw and I'll be purchasing a new one.

Anyone have any ideas on a fix for this?

I highly recomend the Audigy. I think they have a cheap version of it called "sale" or "value" or "bargain", sompthing like this. Its a official title suprisingly enough. But if you want good quality but dont ahve alota money thats a good one... if you do have the credtis I say the regular SB Audigy 2 ZS.

I use it for music more than games really, but it kickz butt in games also :D HL2 was verry nice in it also Call of Duty BUT COD was a little to loud when adjusted properly (almost all the way up is what I consider properly) so the firestation behind my apartments made me turn it down. Kinda dumb... they wake me up all night long but I cant play a daym game with the windows open. There is like noone in my apartment complex (7 units have people I think) so kinda desolate so noone really cares.

I care more about sound quality with music. I'm probably going to pick a card with more of an audiophile aim. Most like an m-audio. I've always liked SBs, up until this card started crapping out.

The 1.27 patch includes an upgrade to version 6.1 of the Miles Sound System. Since it was working (sort of) before you patched the game it's probably a conflict between the miles sound system and your sound card. Are you able to access the options? If so try changing your sound set up, to something more appropriate to your system if all else fails change to NO 3D sound.

If you aren't able to access the options via the menu, go into c:\bos.cfg and change the line {sound.provider} = {} to {sound.provider} = {No 3D Sound} and see if that helps.

Or rather than disabling your sound card you can try these options, from the command line or by editing the shortcut add -m for no music or -s for no sound.

i.e. run

C:\Program Files\14 degrees east\FOT\BOS.exe -s

or

C:\Program Files\14 degrees east\FOT\BOS.exe -m

See if either those help you run the game, you can also try the fix for black screen at start up, which is to remove the files Mssa3d.m3d & Mssa3d2.m3d from the miles folder and see if that helps.

Disabling sound got me as far as I had with the soundcard disabled. I think I can say, with some assurance, that it's the fact that my sound card is on its last legs that's causing the problem. Thanks for the help, but I'll try again once I've got a new card, which I kinda need for other reasons too.

can´t play F. Tactics

I install f. tactics and the frist menu appears normally, but when i click to play it the monitor gets black like entering the game but then returns to windows and everything looks normaly, no error message appears, nothing. Can anyone help me?

I have xp at 3.1mhz , 120g , 512 mg ram and nidvia gforce fx, think it´s all.

I've had the exact problem with ft. And let me tell you... on several games as well. I even thought about sending an email to creative. I love their cards...but this is easily one of the worst card's I've used...

Yes I bought back in 2000 or 01, but still...

Anyways it's working for me know, tx to a full hdd swap+reformat...

Im gonna get an audigy 2 cz something ,quite cheap, right under 100 bux...
