Tactics - Mutants Liberation Army (MLA) campaign

It Wandered In From the Wastes
A little something I wrote a year and a half ago while I was playing around with the FOT editor. Basically I had envisaged a short 4 mission campaign set in the region of Quincy (no new maps would’ve been made – just reworked to save on time). This time the antagonists would have been none others than the BOS themselves. It didn’t take me long (three days to be exact) to appreciate how futile an investment of time that would have been, since most of the ideas I had had proven extremely difficult (or tedious if you like) to realize due to the lousiness of the FOT editor (mostly of the scripting part). I had spent some 2 hours sketching the mission, 8 hours playing with world editor and the scripting system (which is probably one of the worst I have ever seen – I was kinda hoping for something in the range of Phyton, and got this silly GUI trigger event system…gees)
Anyways, take a look-see at what could have been if things have been more auspicious.

The Prologue

“The name's Joshua. From this point onwards I'm officially a dead man walking. (But aren’t we all). The corpses that litter the ground before me (sigh) they used to be the members of a presumptuous group of self-proclaimed saviors of the wasteland, namely that which calls it self: The Brotherhood of Steel. I once had thought The Brotherhood a gallant bunch of cavaliers who gaily wore their high tech armor and with a shrewd hand and clenched fists resolved to rid this wasteland of the impudence that had evolved. But Power is a demon which taints the human spirit, poisoning it with its venal fumes of self-complacency and thus the Archfiend has vicariously by means of guile seduced himself yet another score of mortal progeny. All that mighty host mesmerized by the prospect of world domination and backed up by innumerable forces of mechanical monstrosities has turned with clouded vision and misguided hand against the very ideals it once sought to protect. I – We, shall not stand for this tyranny of Man, for We – the Chosen Ones - are imbued with courage never to submit or yield, nor bow and sue for grace of their infernal Lord. That their wrath shall never extort from us, for that would be an ignominy indeed. We shall wage by force or guile, irreconcilable war against the iniquity of our grand foe. Their ruinous encroachment must not be allowed to continue unabated for they bring death unto the land – poisoners are they whether they know it or not. We shall either put an end unto their decadency or perish in the process - such is our fate, by the will of The Almighty decreed.”
End of monologue - Joshua, the Knight of The Holy Order of St. Moses

Background: Joshua was born and brought up in the region of a city formerly known as Indianapolis. From his early childhood he showed signs of above average spiritual strength and uncanny perceptive gift which was timely and properly noted by the village elders. When he reached his 12th year he was sent to the distant monastery of Jehovah where he received rigorous training and spiritual exaltation upon which he received the status of knighthood. At 26 years of age, Joshua is first and foremost a visionary, a herald of the time to come, the executioner of the Omnipotent’s will. He is noted for his valiancy and shrewdness, and is imbued with all the grace of the Almighty. An excellent sharpshooter, Joshua is trained in the tactics of stealth and guerilla warfare, also respected for his mastery of Ninjitsu.
Starting equipment:
1x Sako TRG 41 .338 Lapua Magnum sniper rifle + night scope/ 25 rounds of ammo
1x Glock 21 .45 ACP pistol / 5 clips
5x SGD (Sarin Gas Dispersant)
5x C4 remote detonated
1x ESA (Environment Stealth Armor)
(A few more things to add)

The campaign would generally be story driven, focusing on the Joshua protagonist and following him through his attempt to foil the BOS despotic regime. Basically it’s an insurgency scenario: The MLA (Mutant Liberation Army) is assembled around a singular mission of fighting out equal rights for all the wasteland dwellers regardless of their race. (This follows the End movie C of FOT). The campaign will be taking place on the same map, using the same cities to make up on time, but with new entities populating the maps. Guerilla tactics would be dominant, as a direct confrontation with BOS is out of the question. The final goal of the first part of the campaign (and probably the last as well) would be the destruction of the BOS C4I nodes and botching of their control in the eastern outskirts of their new “country”.

If anybody is that interested I could dig up the scenario sketch I made for the Quincy mission…

Hmm I thought the triggering system is one of the better I've had a go at using, nice a simple to use, sure some of the options are a little limitted but then as the editor read me says
In general the less triggers used the better. A mission that relies too heavily on triggers will look and feel forced to a player. It is normally better to let the actors run the mission, with triggers only where needed.
The best maps I've played for FOT have had very little scripting. Other than adding or removing opponents depending on the player's actions in a particular mission or previously in a campaign there's not really much you need to trigger other than speech and promotion/demotion most of the events you might need a trigger for in a combat game are covered, and the rest usually can be worked around.

I think it's a really nice little editor, certainly it's the only reason that the game is still on my Hard Drive.
