Taste the rainbow!

FlyingSheep

First time out of the vault
I know this post has to be similar to others, but I've searched and searched but couldn't find a solution. Searches didn't work, I've read through the FAQs, tech issue sections and the such. I've been trying to fix this for two days but I can't find anything to solve the color problems.

I'm running Windows 7 (x64) and I've go the same problem as a few people, the rainbow-like colors for both Fallout 1 and 2. For Fallout 1, I've patched it with the 1.1 all the way up to 1.3 by TeamX. I've also downloaded and patched the high res patches, no change in the slightest. For 2 I tried sFall, also failed. I think I've downloaded and stuffed every patch/mod for this issue into the folder as I could.

Sorry if its a repost. If someone could provide step by step solutions, or a hint as to what I failed so miserably at I would appreciate it.

Edit: While playing Fallout 1, at first everything seems ok, but soon after the screen goes black and only my character is visible, but everything else is black. Also, wherever the mouse goes the fog is revealed, but shortly goes black later on.

Search for "Fallout black screen".

The cause for this behaviour is most likely background programs that interfere with Fallouts' redrawing the screen. Try to use the Task Manager in Windows to close as many of those programs as possible (any sort of managers, scanners, etc. - you might want to disable the network connection while playing.

A direct, if irritating, solution is to enter a different screen (like the Character screen - key 'C') then right back again.

Worked perfectly, the black screen issue is gone. Much obliged for the tip; however, the issue with the multiple colors is still present. Do to its common appearance I assume everyone knows what I'm talking about with the rainbow of colors and all. If not let me know I'll be happy to provide examples. Thanks for the fast responses!

When you tried sfall, did you change the graphics mode to 4 in ddraw.ini? That should fix it. Other than that, Alt + Tab back and forth to desktop a few times usually does it.

I can't believe I missed something so small... All these years at the university and I still can't read lol. Thanks for the tip, now Fallout 2 is fixed and good to go, still need Fallout 1 though. As mentioned above, fixed the black outs. Thank you kindly for the responses!

I had the same problem with the rainbow shit, I fixed it the way you all said it should be fixed now I don't get the rainbow thing, but the graphics in the intro are messed up like they have a very bad quality, they are shaky but the game (while playing is perfectly fine)

installed fallout pached it and then this Ddraw file appeared in the fallout folder but it's a DLL file not a INI file and there you find the section where it says graphics and and it says 0 - for full screen 8 bit graphics; 4 - full sceen drx9; 5 - windowed rdx9 and after that it says sth =0 you replace the 0 with a 4 and save the file it fixed the rainbow but it screwed up the graphics , worsened the quality of the intro clips but the gameplay is perfect :) if you put hi res patch you can forget about the intro movies.
