Tech Issue: Setup can't write to Drive C?

So I'm upgrading to Windows XP from Windows 2000, but the install can only get as far as copying the installation files before it gives me an error message saying it can't write to C and that I should turn off my antivirus program and try again. However, even when I disable Norton (Symantic Anti-Virus Corporate Edition, actually), and end as many programs as task manager will let me, I still get the error. I'd really prefer not to have to reformat, otherwise I'd simply do that. Thoughts/Solutions?

So you're trying to upgrade W2K to WinXP?

I think there are some issues with trying to upgrade to the 'Home' version of XP... the Home version doesn't include some of the features that are common to both W2K and the XP Pro version.

The only other thing which comes to mind is the file system... a error with the FAT or NTFS setup, whichever you may be using.

Cheers,

Very odd. I can't remember whether Win2k dealt with FAT or NTFS disks, but if its's NTFS based there should be no problem. If Win2K on the other hand is FAT based, then you're going to have to reformat. Windows XP requires an NTFS drive to install to.
Lastly, check that you have enough disk space, if you haven't already. ;)

Backup your important files, format c: using the XP install, then install at will, if not there will be a lot of imcompatabilities.

What Briosa said.

It's a mess if you don't remove the old win2k files, errors, crashes and so on.
Be sure to backup the important files, say, to another drive/partition "E:", format C: and use C: as a system-only disk.

win2k cannot use FAT it can only be installed in NTFS. Win xp on the other hand can use both, so it’s without doubt not a filesystem problem.

I would recommend backing up your data, or use winXP file and transfer wizard to transfer your setting on the new os.

win2k doesn’t have this soft, but you can winxp cd for that (its under additional tasks).
You can specify what do you want to save from blabla….

Note, if you have w2k server, or advanced server you cannot use the file and settings wizard.

After you collected your setting and files, burn those on a cd or copy those in a different physical drive.

then simply format your hdd with winxp setup (you need cd boot). another option is to install xp in a different folder other then c:\windows, you'll have 2 operating systems, simply transfer your setting manually, if you know how.
