The death of hardcore gaming?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Here's an interesting topic on the neo-geo.com forums complaining about the mainstream. Most of the complaints here involve the G4 network tagging Shenmue as one of the worst games ever, even worse than Superman 64 or E.T. 2600. Yeah, I'm a little pissed about that... no, wait, supremely pissed about that. Yeah, the voice acting was laughable, but the gameplay was truely awesome.

Anyways, the question must be asked: did the mainstream kill off hardcore gaming? Discuss.

Oh, and to entice some reading, there are a few comments early on about Fallout. 8)

Thx for the links, Daemon.

Under the "Tooting My Sega Whore Horn" file, if anybody has a PS2, go search out a copy of a game called Rez. It's a pretty good shooter, but the atmosphere and the music makes it the best example of games that you see more often.

And if anybody finds a Trans Vibrator, well, I salute you. :)

WTF? Why not just get F:BOS and buy the prostitute:

Then you get the vibrating controller, plus the satisfaction that you spent virtual money for the same act you try to simulate. Rawr.

Crap, did the thread get derailed THAT fast?

Might as well get back on topic, then...
I guess that, in automotive terms, the mainstream gamers are content with family sedans or pickup trucks, while the hardcore gamers are represented by the Mazda RX-8: it's different, it's been praised by the critics, but nobody gives a damn about it aside from the true fanatics who know a thing or two about rotaries.

Speaking of, I'm looking to buy a Lancer Evolution, but the new Mazdaspeed Miata interests me... :)

Anyways, getting back on topic, is my analogy correct?

i hope i got the question right...

the fact is that mainstream always wins, because most people don't have time like us hardcore gamers, and all they want is that shallow quick orgasem, and not the intesifying depth of another act..mmmm....

ahem, well then, i was saying, people will have more time available, because jobs will become less and less time consuming(argh, if you don't work in hi-tec), anyway.....

ok---if--- jobs will be that way, people will have more free time, and that means that if they become gamers(like us poor bastards) they will want more depth in thier games...hopfully our gaming intrest will last that long...or maybe hopefully it wouldn't and we would have to face the machines in the real world(muhahaha, as in matrix)

... yeah I know that's a little off topic, but i REALY wonder what this vibrator is realy good for..

I'm kinda fuzzy as well. I mean, the Dual Shock 2 provides the same exact vibration effect as the TV. Considering how rare it is, though, it's probably for bragging rights for collectors.

And Morhg, I give you a V8-powered Miata. Yeah, it fits.

Once again, getting back onto topic, there is one game that I'm convinced will cater only to the hardcore: a little GameCube game from Capcom called "Killer 7". Call it a hunch. :D
