The Gothic Series

Borov

Just yer average gopnik
The first 2 Gothic games are, to me, one of the most underrated games ever.Gothic I set the standard for 3rd person action RPGs back in 2001.

The people that played it either loved it or thought it was ok. SO WHY ISNT IT BEING MENTIONED MORE IN THE GAMING COMMUNITY ??!!

I loved the first 2 games in the series.Simple story, good combat, interesting characters, lotsa quests....Everything a good rpg needs is there.Gothic III however was unfinished and too ambitious for its time and because of that it failed to live up to its parents.

What are your thoughts of it? Did you (not) like the games? If so,why?

If you are thinking of playing them or have played the already, id check this guy out:

Gothic I and II are absolutely fantastic, two of my favourite (action) RPGs.
I guess they're kinda underrated because they're by a german developer, and Gothic II didn't get any marketing in the US at all.

Why would the games being by a german developer result in them being underrated? Do people hate Germans? I don't understand.

No, they just didn't get that big. Remember, it was the early Naughts, downloading big games wasn't really a thing, and marketing for video games was way more dependent on print magazines.
Gothic I was the first game of a new developer, and it didn't get a big publisher in the US, so the marketing was low despite good critical ratings.
After the (european) success of Gothic, Gothic II was much bigger, but got almost no marketing in the US due to a fuck-up by the publisher/distributor, so naturally it wouldn't be that well known over there, either.

I think the problem with Gothic is that it's from a german developer, from a time when it was either "USA or Japan" when it came to RPGs. Gothic I is a game that took me a long, long while to get into, thanks to its bizarre control scheme, and here I see another reason why it isn't more popular.

What I like about Gothic is how lively the world feels. It's a 2001 videogame that feels more lively than New Vegas, which may come across as an overreaction to some users, but it truly is. NPCs would walk around, eat, drink, smoke, take a piss, cook, lie near a campfire, draw their weapons on you if you entered into their huts uninvited. Factions were meaningful and you felt a part of one after going through trials. Generally you needed the approval of different members to advance through the ranks, and the combat system was insanely satisfying because it relied mostly on your character's skill and equipment, but your ability as a player as well.

It's a testament to the greatness of Gothic that if I pull a gun on someone in Fallout, all they will say is "you are an asshole", whereas if I do so in Gothic the NPCs will ALL draw their weapons on me until I put mine down.

I thank the RPG Codex for ridiculing me for not playing Gothic because of the controls, otherwise I would have uninstalled the game and never picked it up again. I just wish I didn't get annoying fps drops in Gothic II, it's the only reason why I've put the game on hold indefinitely.

Whenever i think about Gothic, i think about a game made in 2001 that had a river with a real simulated stream that would alter your swimming (you could dive too!) and a game that had actuall ladders and climbing! While in morrowind you just pressed enter when near the door, here you would actually see the animation of opening it, or pulling levers etc. Of course many hilarious bugs came from this, but i think it was a pretty bold move from such small up and coming devs to add all these complex, bug prone features, while everyone else was just streamlining everything.
