The Last Of His Kind: a story of Rage
Part 5
By John Davies
10/24/00

Rage was startled at the appearance of his own face looking back at him. Yet, it wasn't his own face, it was his former face, the one he had before the enclave had gotten a hold of him.

The visage of the reflection continued to look directly at Rage, as if studying him somehow, then, with a twist, the face walked away from Rage revealing the body of a Deathclaw.

"How is it possible? He is me." He asked, turning to Altyu.

"No Rage, he is what you were. You have changed, for better or for worse... you have changed." Altyu said with a sigh.

Rage continued to watch the retreating form of his former self. The being continued to walk stealthily down the path, until he stopped, as if detecting something.

The former Rage crouched down on the path in a battle ready posistion, he only eased up after a moment when two large figures stepped out of the bushes next to him. "Report." he told the two large deathclaws standing next to him.

"Garn... and Sela..." Rage said in bewilderment.

The one known as Sela spoke. "Something has intruded onto our lands, Rage. We do not know who has done so, but the forest is being too quiet. Something is here."

The former Rage grunted. "I have sensed this for some time now. I found tracks on the eastern paths, made by large boots. I do not like the feeling of this."

"What do we do?" the deathclaw known as Garn asked.

"Garn, go back to the Vault and warn our bretheren, alert the defenders. We are possibly being invaded. Sela, you will come with me, We need to find out who are new visitors are."

Garn turned and dissapeared into the forest as The former Rage, along with Sela, raced down the path, continuing right past Rage and Altyu.

:No! stop! you musn't leave the protection of the forest!" Rage yelled at the quickly retreating forms of Sela, and his former self.

"They cannot hear you Rage." Altyu spoke. "We are just watchers here, this time slip only allows us to view, not to interact.

"But... he.... I.... am making the wrong choice. I knew that it was the wrong move."

"Then why did you make it?"

Rage hunched down onto the ground, as if stricken by something painful. "Because, I had found more than one boot track, I had found at least twelve. I knew we were being invaded, I needed to find out by what! Our village had no chance to fight back if we did not know what it was that was attacking us."

"That would seem to be a wise choice." Altyu stated.

Rage growled. "It was! But that was not the only choiced I had to make."

Alytu stood there, looking down at Rage. "Good, then at least you remember all of what happened."

"How could I forget?" Rage screamed.

"Come Rage, there is more to do before we are done here."

"What... what do we do?" Sela asked in a quivering voice as she looked down into the canyon a short distance to the forest.

What she saw, disturbed her.

A military camp had sprouted in the canyon, not even four miles from the forest. A small army of heavily armour figures were posistioned at various points in the camp, all were armed to the teeth, and all were obvious professionals at what they did.

But, one figure stood out more than most, standing twelve feet tall, he appeared to be a mobile tank. He was shouting orders to the other men in the camp.

Rage ignored her question. "Do you smell that?"

"They are human, except for the largest one, I cannot tell what he is."

Sela turned her head to look at Rage, their relationship had grown to more than leader and follower in the past month. It hurt her to see him with such a worried expression on his face.

"What do we do Rage?" she repeated.

"We have to go back and warn our people. The weaponry they have down there is shocking, we cannot stand a chance unless we are prepared."

Rage turned away from the canyon and preceded along the trail back to the forest, with Sela in tow.

Rage and Altyu stood along the cavern edge, looking down on the Enclave troops below. Rage could not help but to growl.

Altyu studied Rage's face. "They did horrible things to you, didn't they Rage?"

"I am a prisoner of what happened old man. What is done is done."

"Is that why you want to run down there and rip everyone in that canyon to shreds?" Altyu asked.

"It is not for what they did to me! It is what they did to my people!" Rage screamed.

"This is not the time for vengeance. Come, we must follow the path."

"I do not wish to experience this again."

"You must! Now come, we have to be there."

Rage and Altyu stood in the middle of a clearing in the forest, looking down at the bloody corpse of Garn.

Altyu studied the expression on Rage's face, for once, it was not one of anger, it was one of fear and sorrow.

"He tried his best, but he could not make it to the vault to warn our people."

Rage kneeled down and placed a hand on the forehead of his deceased bretheren. "I am sorry your life ended so quickly, I am sorry for allowing this to happen to you." Rage spoke with a quivering voice.

Sela and the former Rage broke through the underbush and into the clearing, they hit a dead stop at the sight of Garn's corpse.

"Brother!" the former Rage cried out.

Sela slumped to the ground at the sight of her dead friend.

The two huddled over the corpse of their bretheren, and mourned.

"He was dear to you, wasn't he Rage?" Altyu asked.

"He was my best friend, and my student."

"But his death was not as hard on you as Sela's was it?

Rage's eyes locked onto Sela. "She was my mate, she was the one who I loved. And they took her away from me!"

"It was not just that she was your mate was it Rage? It was the first time one of your species had gone against your race's ways, mating was not permitted amongst the population, except for the queen mother and pack leader, wasn't it Rage?

Rage turned and looked Altyu dead in the eyes, but without anger. "I loved her, we would share our free time hunting, and sleeping beneath the stars, she was the one I was meant to be with!"

"And yet, our time would not last long."

Those words hung in the air as the sound of a firearm going off filled the air."

Sela fell to the ground, in a bloody mess. The bullet had passed straight through her throat.

Four Enclave soldiers wearing heavy armour, and wielding Gauss Rifles stepped into the clearing.
The former Rage roared at the sight of his fallen mate, yet instead of attacking the soldiers, he hesitated.

"What is it that is holding you back Rage?"

Rage's eyes filled with tears as he watched what he had already seen, too many times in his nightmares. "My better judgement was calling me to run to the Vault, and prepare our people for battle."

"What is holding you back?"

"Vengeance!" the former Rage screamed as he launched himself at the Enclave soldiers.

One soldier was down with a slashed throat before he could even comprehend the speed that the deathclaw was moving.

The other three raised their Gauss Rifles to fire.

One more hit the ground dead, before they managed to shoot.

One bullet ripped through Rage's side, the other punctured his left thigh.

Screaming in pain, Rage launched himself at the Enclave soldiers again, but only to be shot in the chest.

The bullet ripped through his ribs and right through to the other side, completely clearing his body. Rage fell to the ground.

The two remaining soldiers strapped their Rifles to their backs and proceeded to examine the corpses.

"Bloody hell! This one is still alive" the soldier who was examining Rage's body called out.

The other soldier, finding the other two deathclaws dead, walked over to his associate, and examined Rage's body. "Tough little bugger isn't he?"

"Come, let's take this one back to camp, maybe there is some use for him. I always wanted a deathclaw fur doormat!"

The two soldiers picked the body up, one taking the shoulders, the other taking the legs.

Rage slumped to the ground, all of this was too much for him. "I failed!" he cried.

"Your people had no warning about the Enclave soldiers."

"Because I let my lust for vengeance get in the way!"

"No, I do not believe that it was vengeance Rage, I believe it was your namesake."

Rage continued to mourn the deaths of his friends. "Take me away from here old man, I do not wish to experience this any longer."

"I wish I could, but we are not done."

Yello folks, I'm just writing this because I pretty much have the entire story figured out, so I wanna let you know how I plan on writing it all out. I've realized that 1 part per day just isn't practical for my schedule, so I am moving it to more of a part every 2 days, there will be aproximately 13-15 parts to this, and most likely a sequel, which will be written in much larger parts. I know that it can be hard to follow a story when it's so sectionalized like this, but as like when I write my novel works, I write in sectioned chapters, kind of like scene's in a play. I really hope that you guys can be patient, and hold out for me to get the work done, and I will be providing the entire work in 1 large file, for anybody who wants it later on.
