The Last Of His kind: A story of Rage
Part 7
By John Davies
11/6/2000

"But she is so young. How could she be so important?" Rage said as he looked down upon the sleeping infant.

Rage and Altyu had returned to their reality an hour before, where they found the child to still be asleep.

"Young she may be, but it does not change the fact that she is needed for the future to survive. She is our hope, our salvation, our destiny." Altyu replied.

"You are sure of this?"

"I am as sure as I can be, considering the lack of evidence. My people are known to be wrong, but this is something that we have been preparing for, for a very long time. I only ask that you trust me in this."

Rage continued to study the small child. She appeared to be aproximately 4 years old, with sand blonde hair, and blue eyes.

"What is her name?"

"We are not sure. We know little about her past. We believe that she was the offspring of two Tribals that were caught into slavery. We assume that she was sold to the caravan as a servent, or other malicious means."

"What is it I need to do?"

"That, is another thing we are not sure of. We can only understand so much of the puzzle, and the means to the end are not a part of our understanding. You will have to find some of the answers on your own. For now, I suggest you get some rest, and then being the search. Just remember, to protect her at all times, if you fail, we all shall suffer."

"I understand."

"Good, I have faith in you my friend."

Rage turned and faced Altyu. "Those are words I have trouble believing. I did not think I would hear them again in my lifetime."

"I do not choose who I call friend easily Rage. Despite your past, I see something in you that gives me hope."

Rage was silent for what seemed long a long period of time, as he seemed to be sizing up Altyu. "Thank you... friend."

Altyu smiled. "I am glad to hear you call me that, I was hoping you could forgive me for the pain I have made you recall."

Altyu reached into his robes and pulled a small pouch out of a hidden pocket. "This is a small amount of money to help you along the way, I wish it was more, but my people do not see the need for currency." he said as he handed the pouch to Rage.

"Now, I must return to my people to inform them of what has transpired. I wish you luck Rage, you will need it along the way. Farewell."

Altyu turned and left the small wagon.

Fear.

Fear and despair was what Rage was experiencing as he ran through the forest. He did not know what was chasing him, but he did know that he had to escape.

It had seemed that he had been running for all of existence as he entered the clearing in the woods.

"No! Not again! I do not want to be here!"

"This is where you belong Rage, here... with me."

Rage turned to face the origin of the voice, only to find Sela standing there, missing half of her throat.

"This can't be!"

"Come now, my dear Rage. You know very well that this is where you want to be. You cannot hide from this."

Rage felt something tugging on his foot. Looking down, he saw the face of the little girl, who was pulling at his leg, and looking up at him.

"It is time to leave this place." she said.

Rage blinked in confusion, and then woke up.

*****

His eyes opened to the sight of the little girl curcled up in lap. Soundly asleep.

"I must have fallen asleep." He thought to himself.

The girl began stirring in her sleep. After a moment, her eyes opened and she looked up at Rage.

She slowly stood up and sat on the floor, in front of Rage.

"You were having a nightmare, weren't you?" She asked.

"How... how did you know?" Rage replied in shock.

"I have nightmares a lot." She said with a sad gaze. "You look like you had one too."

Rage just looked at the girl for a few moments, until she broke the silence. "I'm hungry. are we going to eat?"

"Food. I haven't eaten in two weeks." Rage replied.

"They fed me, but only small scraps of food, with bugs in it."

"Who did?"

"The bad men who hurt me."

"The carvaners.... Don't worry, you're safe now."

"I know." She said with a smile. "You saved me from them, you are very nice, you know?"

For the first time in weeks, Rage smiled.

"Ummm... what are you?" She asked.

Rage did not understand the question, until he noticed that he was not wearing his robes.

He searched for an answer to give this small girl, but he couldn't place it into words.

"I will tell you, but first, let's find something to eat. And then we need to get moving."

The girl Smiled at the word food. "Where are we going?"

"We have to find some people, to help us. We;re going to go to New Reno."
