I just came across this and thought I should share. It is not really "fan" art as it was used in the game:

I did the high poly source model, game resolution model and normal map. The texture shown here is just a rough diffuse map (not used in game), as textureing duties were handled by another artist.

I quite like the model, but his texturing is far too Diablo-ish for Fallout. The thorns on the head could be less exaggerated and more of a detail to the head than a main feature as it is now (all easily "fixed" with textures). But overall I think he did a good job. Remember, the thorns might have been just a pixel big in the original.

Looking at it in-game I would say it fits this game's design

Personally, I think the art in fallout 3 does stand out and is pretty well made (not gears of war, but no one goes there).

Question is if it's true to the original.

Sadly, it often seems they took "shades of gray" literally. I would have liked more rich colors. But looking at how it turned out in the end, I would say they accomplished something. It would be nice to see more concept art and descriptions of the creature from the original design.

I don't think it's true to the original, the original looked more or less just like a cow with two heads, the one in Fallout 3 looks like it's about to fall apart. A ghoul-brahmin... Certainly not something I would like to eat. The oversized udders are just silly, they would rather be smaller than on a pre-war cow as they are a disadvantage and would be cleared from the genepool quite fast.
