The Sierra Army Base

Mr.Mojo-Rising

First time out of the vault
Greetings,

Over the the army base, and as a strategy to get into it I deicded to use a scoped hunting rifle to take out the turrents. However my char has the one handed perk and can't really hit anything if the weapon requires two hands. I've tried giving the rifle to an NPC , shooting at the turrets, getting hit, and then having Cassidy take it out. However I take damage from this and it is rather.... annoying :>

Anyhow, any general tips into getting into it (spoiler free if ya can ;>) would be apreciated.

Thanks,

-MM

You can engage combat first without getting in range with the turrets. If you have enough AP's, you can get within eyesight of a turret, engage combat mode, fire a shot, and the use the remaining AP's to run away. It'll take a while but it should work.

What I recommend you do is have your NPC's wait outside near the gates. This way, if you do engage combat, a melee fighter (such as Sulik) won't rush in and get his fool ass wasted. Make sure that you tell them to wait far away at the outside of the gates or else they will still help you out even if they are not in your party.

A scoped hunting rifle works range-wise but you are still burdened with the One-handed perk. I'd recommend going around New Reno and try getting into a random encounter with same Mafia fighting Yakuza in order to get a Sniper Rifle off one of the mafia men. Then head back to the army base. Like I said before, engage combat before the turret starts shooting, fire one round, and the run away. Rinse and repeat as necessary. It doesn't matter how many times you miss since the turret is stationary and can't chase after you, right? Also, make sure you attack from the sides. There are four turrets all together (I think) and they are situated so that they cover each other. You don't want to get torn apart accidentally.

Luck to you, hope this helps.

One doesn't have to go look for random encounters to get a Sniper Rifle in this case. One is lying near the body of one of the people slayed by the turrets. A Sniper Rifle doesn't really solve the problem though. It's a two-handed weapon, too. A Scoped Hunting Rifle is more accurate than a Sniper rifle, in fact. It doesn't do as much damage when it hits though.

You don't really even have to move to take out the turrets. Find out what the outer limit of their range is, by initiating combat at a very long distance, taking a shot at them, and if they do not fire back that means you're out of their range. Then go one step closer and do the same. When they finally are able to fire back, well, you won't be hurt much since you're on the outer limit of the turret's range. Then you just take one step back, and start shooting. Like Gunslinger said, it doesnt matter if you miss, since you won't be fired back at. If your character really cannot hit with these two-handed weapons (there are no one-handed weapons with a really good range available yet), you might try letting Cassidy stay with you. Arm him and yourself with a Scoped Hunting Rifle or a Sniper Rifle, and move yourself and Cassidy to just outside the turret's range. Set Cassidy's combat distance to 'stay where you are', and take a shot at the turret. Even if you miss, Cassidy should understand who the enemy is and start attacking the turret, but since he's on 'stay where you are', he'll keep shooting from the same position until the turret is destroyed.

I had a similar problem with the turrets in my current game since I got there pretty early, and also had the one-hander trait (as well as fast shot, so no crippling hits for me), so I'll give you a rundown of what I did. Although the other posts will probably be more useful to you.

First of all, your best bet for one-handed weapon is probably the .223 pistol. I believe I got this from New Reno Arms or somewhere nearby. You won't be able to simply pick them off from a distance, however, I find that if you attack during the night, you can hit them from the maximum range and still be far enough away that the turrets' damage will be negligible (IIRC, I only had leather armour MKII).

If you do this, you can eliminate the outter turrets one by one either by slowly wearing it down with your pistol (try using mentats to boost your PE), or have your group go in while you draw the turrets' fire (though you have to make sure your guys don't get between the turret and you). Having Marcus helps alot in this case. Also, make sure you only engage one turret at a time. I'd start with the turret on the far left where the fence is torn, then make your way right through the outter layer of turrets.

Once you get through the first layer of turrets, you can kill the rest easily enough without getting hit by using the compound's wall and other obstacles to your advantage (take one shot, duck behind cover, repeat).

One thing I've noticed is that if you take the first shot, sometime the turret you fired on will be so focused on firing at you that they won't fire at your NPCs even if they in it's LOS and you're not. This isn't always the case though, but you could try to use it that to your advantage once you know when it does this or not.

... Or you could just skip the SAD for now. Even if you get through the turrets you'll probably have a tough time cracking the security and completing the quests inside if you're already having trouble with the turrets, especially if you're playing on Hard game difficulty like I am. Then again, if you're playing a science character, it's definitely worth your while.

A Gauss Pistol Could Help, but, I don't remember the Range of the 233 pistol, but she give so much damage too and can help, you can find one with gangs around New Reno!!

As far as i know, a pulse grenade would knock those turrets 3 ways from Sunday, but I haven't tested this solution, it SHOULD work, since turrets are mechanical beings. But the downside is that you have to have a decent throw skill which I bet NOBODY on this forum has, FALCHE free.

Do you actually mean pulse granades? by the way , talking about granades - the pulse granadeds do harm living creatures but with pulse damage ( not in FO1 ). Let's talk about it in "Demolition man" topic.
