Thermite

SkynetV4

Mildly Dipped
I read in a mischief manual that if one combines aluminium filings with iron oxide in 1:1 ratio and heats it (1000+ Celsius), a reduction reaction occurs where aluminium, being a reactive metal, starts burning and striping the oxygen from the rust, leaving molten iron slag. I heard that the reaction produces heat comparable (in a small scale) to an A-bomb's heat. Has anybody had any experiences with Thermite mixtures? Maybe those of you that had experience with explosive, military ordinance (sp?)?

*raises hand*
Heard about it, got interested, have made it.

Only problematic thing about it is the high ignition temperature needed. I used a strip of magnesium as the detonator.
A few cubic centimeters burned through the metal workdesk quite nicely

Someone with a vengeful or otherwise nasty mind could have fun with thermite...

mix enough of it, in an aluminum can. ignite it ith a thin strip of magnesium or magnesium fileings (can obtain a magnesium firestarter at almost any sports store), easy way to start the magnesium is to pile the fileings around the base of a strike anywhare match head, with some of the homemade thermite mixture mixed in with the magnesium all at the top of the can, light the match either using another match or a lighter. bam, there you've got yourself a homeade thermite grenade.

Some of the many uses of the thermite grenade are destroying vehicle engines, disableing arteillery... starting campfires, starting house-fires... The pontial of any pyromanic is increased exponentially when their equiped with thermite..

I've never had the chance to play with real thermite... but the homade stuff does work well..

ive heard of people using thermite to burn through car engines, never seen it though. This might not be a car but it gives you a sense of what thermite is all about.

How did you manage to produce enough iron oxide? I was thinking of going to an educational store where they might sell chemical components.

Yeah, iron oxide is just rust.

And this is hellasomething that mr. t or macguyver would love.

He did. I remember an episode where he used rust and a signal flare to burn his way out of a jail cell or something.

MacGuyver is my favorite hero, after Ozrat of course!

MacGuyver is a pussy, he's only shot someone *once*. Any hero should have a killcount of at least 50+.

ppff. Luke = definitely NOT my hero!

Hey, Mr. Rogers had 25 kills to his name back in 'Nam, then he became pacifist and hosted a children's program. Know why he wore those sweaters? To hide all the tattoos he got during his service. That is what I call a hero.

OK

Back on topic, thermite is what they use to repair/install railway tracks.
