Thinking of Upgrading PC specs, which is better?

The site basically says the 12700 uses double the power but is about 2-4 times better I think.

So you have a 6700K already? Or what do you mean?
Wikipedia says 6th gen is from 2015 and 12th from 2022. So it makes sense to switch it out, if it's that old.
But it also says they use different sockets, so if you have a 6700K now, you'll probably need a new mainboard if you want a new CPU?
At that point, probably time to switch out everything.
 
Ah, shows how much I know. Yeah I have the 6700K already. I bought this gaming desktop years and years ago. I can't remember how long ago wit was honestly and it might just be showing its age but I was hoping I could just upgrade parts of it rather than just splurge on a whole new setup.

If I were to consider upgrading should I just look for something that has the same socket type or am I obligated to basically just upgrade/switch out the entire motherboard as well?

Earliest recorded date I can find on the PC is 2017 so the computer is at least 7.5 years old at this point as I remember buying it during a summer.
 
Well, I'm not sure if the CPU even matters that much for modern gaming anyway, and the one you have sounds good already, but I also haven't kept up.
You could probably get away with just getting a new GPU, but dunno which one you have?
 
Yeah ok, that's quite a few generations ago too...
So a whole new rig is probably a good idea.

But the real question is whether it's even necessary to upgrade. I mean, new games all suck anyway.
What did you need a new CPU for?
 
I wanted to play Sons of The Forest but my computer sounds like a space engine.

It could just be that the game is poorly optimized but still, I just don't wanna have to worry about not being able to play certain games.
I don't buy a lot of fancy games with them triple of A's but when I do I'd like them to at least run.
 
I've had a 2070 for 4 years and can run most games on high at 1440p. Get a good 4000-series GPU, and you'll be set for a good few years. Just make sure to upgrade your motherboard and PSU; they're definitely too old. You're looking at building a new PC, so maybe save the case if it's good.
 
I think I'll just be lazy and buy a new PC outright tbh. If it was just replacing some parts of the PC I could venture into the "building" aspect to get learned but building a whole PC from scratch is gonna be too overwhelming for me.

Is there any CPU, GPU or anything else I should be mindful of? Like I remember some games having problems with some GPU brand. So like, what's the best thing to look out for on average?

(also holy shit why does no computers come with a damn disk drive anymore? every single desktop I'm looking at is basically 40 fans but I can't see a single slit for a disk drive on them)

Do you need a disc drive anyway?
External DVD or blu-ray via USB is cheap. And easy to put away since it is rarely used.
But it is annoying that all cases have RGB colour shit now, yeah. GPUs too. Need to install crappy ASUS bloatware to make the colours stop.
 
Well I just don't want to have another peripheral lying around cluttering up the place. Easier if it is just baked into the desktop itself.

You're making the right choice, just make sure to copy any data you want saved from the old one. Cdon isn't the safest place to buy anymore. It's Wish + drop shipping combined into a hellish mix. I'd also get an extra stick of M2 memory, preferably 2 TB, so you're set for a long time. Unfortunately, it has no internal CD drive, you're gonna have to get a larger case or an external one instead. I have an internal one, but my case is >10 years old and has been modified more than Theseus's ship.
