This is how all comedians should do it

To those who might wish to "torrent" these shows:

Look, I don't really get the whole "torrent" thing. I don't know enough about it to judge either way. But I'd just like you to consider this: I made these files extremely easy to use against well-informed advice. I was told that it would be easier to torrent the way I made it, but I chose to do it this way anyway, because I want it to be easy for people to watch and enjoy this video in any way they want without "corporate" restrictions.

Please bear in mind that I am not a company or a corporation. I'm just some guy. I paid for the production and posting of this video with my own money. I would like to be able to post more material to the fans in this way, which makes it cheaper for the buyer and more pleasant for me. So, please help me keep this being a good idea. I can't stop you from torrenting; all I can do is politely ask you to pay your five little dollars, enjoy the show, and let other people find it in the same way.

Sincerely,
Louis C.K.

Kinda reminds me of old Edward Norton.
Wait what? Since when was Ed a stand-up?

EDIT: Nevermind, you probably meant physically. I'm super smart.

One of the best. Saw him at Stress Factory in New Brunswick, NJ.
I have a ticket to see him this December!

Maybe not the broke part, but yeah. He actually is making a ton of money do the '5$ each' thing but I know exactly what you mean. Sigh.

I wonder how much money George Carlin had when he died. CK almost cries whenever he talks about Carlin and the effect Carlin had on his life and his craft/career/whatever you want to call it.

Carlin had an extremely long, very prolific, very consistent carer that covered a lot of different media and he kept working until the very end. He did more than alright for himself.

Wait, really?
I thought Louis CK was one of the more popular ones these days. I mean, he's got his show on HBO and everything. (which is great by the way)

Dane Cook is fucking pathetic. People really like that guy?
Then again, I just saw the first half of a show on TV with Larry The Cable Guy, and somehow people thought that was good. I have no fucking clue how.

Well, Cimmerian probably can't travel time or read the future, but what they probably meant was that until recently, Louis CK was really poor. He's got skits from five or ten years ago about being overdrawn in his accounts, etc. However, with the new development of selling his stuff on his own for 5$ each, he's made something like a million dollars and will of course continue to make more. So it's safe to say that as of 2011/2012, he's doing just fine and actually quite well for himself.

And the approach to tour ticket sales is working as well, assumedly also working in his favor financially although that's just conjecture on my part: http://www.techdirt.com/blog/casest...ion-1-week-scalping-drops-25-to-below-1.shtml

Re: Dane Cook, I think people need to chill out. Here's the facts as I see them:
* He's actually pretty funny. You need to approach it without buying into judgement or any hype you've heard (negative or positive)
* He does, however, reuse the same material all the time, so if you buy a few of his CDs like half of the stuff is on the other disc as well.
* He does a good job in movies he's done, such as Waiting or Employee Of The Month. Those movies are both hilarious and well-done. Actually I like the actor Dane better than the stand-up Dane. heh.

So at the end of the day, people like to give Dane Cook shit, but he's a genuinely funny guy, he's just kinda shitty at writing new jokes and coming up with new material. When/if he has an epiphany like Louis CK had when he learned to scrap material like Carlin did, I think he'll be a fantastic comedian. I can't comment on the stealing jokes allegations as of course no one but Dane and the alleged thieve-ees knows the truth, but obviously if that is true, stealing jokes is low and worthless-piece-of-shit territory. Which is why I hate Carlos Mencia.

For me personally, I stopped listening to / watching Dane Cook not because I don't think he's funny, but just because he recycles enough stuff that I got bored watching his shows.

Dane Cook is a joke thief. Do a little research and you'll find all the evidence you need on YouTube -- along with comments from his idiot fans saying things like, "who carez it sounds funnier when Dane Cook does it!"

But I heard his brother embezzled all his money, so I guess there's that to consider.

LouisCK reminds me a little of Jerry Seinfeld: I think his stand up is very good, but his TV show is where his talent really shines. If you haven't seen his show, check it out (the episode with Doug Stanhope is probably my favorite).

When Opie and Anthony were on FM radio they would talk to comedians a lot. CK was on their show often, Jim Nornton was a co-host and they talked to Dane Cook over the phone sometimes. They all would talk about their job and how stand up is fucking hard. So joke thief or "cruising on a single bit for years" guys are actually common. Back in the 80's and 90's you could get away with that but now with the internet and tv...

Anyway I like Dane Cook but when he got huge I think his stand up suffered. When you blow up it can be like that. Fresh material is hard to find especially when you don't use the pop/current events/political routines. Oh and not everyone can be a genius like Carlin.

I had not thought of any of this, thanks for your post 8-)

I think joke stealing allegations tend to be a bit overblown anyway. I remember once reading a pretty good blog series on "parallel thinking", essentially arguing that very similar jokes can be created completely independently.

Yep.

And a lot of times the stolen jokes are about really stupid shit, for example the Itchy Asshole joke (both Louis CK and Dane Cook had one about this) and that sort of thing. It's not like jokes about an itchy asshole are unique or intellectual property worthy yknow. Pretty generic stuff.

I think what you're probably referring to is

It's true. Think about it: you have thousands and thousands of would-be comedians all trying to come up with jokes at the same time. There's bound to be some overlap.

That said, the real thieves are easy to spot if you really pay attention. Their incidents of "parallel thinking" tend to happen with disturbing frequency, for one thing. Anyway, the best comedians have unstealable material. No one in his right mind would try to do any of Steve Martin's act. He'd be busted instantly.

As an aside, I saw Carlos Mencia doing a TV commercial for some kind of weight-loss snake oil. I think he's found his level.

I watched Louis C.K the other night because of this thread. He is pretty damn funny in my book. I doubt he will be hurting for money anytime soon.

Yeah you got netflix right? Lots of good stand up specials on there. Jim Gaffigan and Joe Rogan are two I'd recommend. Also Louis CK's show Louis is on there. Only watched the pilot but it was funny.
