Tiles without cost.

First time out of the vault
I have read many of the tutorials for modding tiles and sprites. Most of them mention photoshop. However, I cannot afford photoshop. Is there a cheaper alternative to photoshop.

I am already able to produce most of the effects needed to make the tiles with freeware, I just cannot mark the background color as transparent on a PNG file

I assume this is for FOT, for making tiles you can use just about any graphics editing software. I still use the version of Corel that came with my computer. For making sprites you'll need Photoshop or something that can create raw and act files that are compatible with Spray, as far as I'm aware no-one has found an alternative as yet.

Meaby You can try Gimp ? There is also windows version .
However you need to download png plug-in separatly
due to license problems .

I thought it was GIF's that had the licensing restrictions, that was why people started using PNGs.

I don't know if GIMP will do what you want with PNGs, as I've been able to make tiles just with Corel, Redviewer and the FT Tools but I haven't been able to produce RAW and ACT files with GIMP that'll work in Spray.

My copy of corel is 3.0 and doesn't support png files. I will try gimp and see if it will let me mark clear colors in png files. I hope so. I have so many tile ideas and so little time.

If it's tiles that you are making then you don't really need to mark clear colours. What I do is mask out everything that I don't want and save the file with the mask. Then when the png is converted to a zar the background or whatever I masked out is transparent.

I know what your gonna say, support the program by buying it, problem is its so damn expensive and companys like microsoft disserves to have all their programs copied, so download the latest version of photoshop instead dude, saves u cash and time.

Ohh crap, Iv'e pissed Odin off now havent I, doesnt matter I wouldnt copy a game like fallout, I would and have bought it.

Bit of topic .
How You can write Alpha chanel in PNG Format ?
That impossible in Photoshop - png just dosn't support
any alpha chanel .

It should support an alpha channel. If you are using Photoshop LE, then it doesn't offer you to create any channels. There also is Macromedia Fireworks which allows you to work in png but doesn't allow to save raw files. The full version of Photoshop can be found on Ebay for alot cheaper than buying new. You can even buy an older version like 5.0 which is what I use. Just make sure it isn't LE.

First of all : I was wrong with gimp and PNG - that gif format
is patented .
Second : Im using photoshop Elements , bundled software with
my digital camera .
I can write png's with transparency but never with separate
alpha channel . Photoshop Help explain that png can not
handle alpha but this what i see on Png Site is not true .
I never had any problems with transparency creating tiles
for FOT but following FOT Tile editing tutorials i still wonder
what the point with creating alpha channel ?
Forgive me my knowledge about this language and graphic works .

I asked a friend of mine about this and he told me about something called PIXIA. I really don't know anything about it so you may want to google it and find out if it does what you need, it's supposed to be great. Anyway, I'll go check it out for myself.
