ToEE is Gold!

Lived Through the Heat Death
The Temple of Elemental Evil , a game made by Tim Cain of Fallout fame is now gold.

If you want to know more about the game read this interview, here are some zips:
6. Can you tell us why you chose turn based over real time for the game play?

TC: D&D is, at its heart, a turn-based game. Combat and all of its related rules, like initiative, are inherently turn-based, and many of the feats, skills and spells depend on this aspect of D&D. Yes, I could have converted the rules to real-time combat and either thrown away or heavily modified the rules to adapt to this mode of play, but I didn’t see the point. I wanted to make a “true to paper-and-pencil” D&D computer game, and turn-based was the way to go.

19. How do you think Greyhawk will stack up against Never Winter Nights and its expansions? What does Greyhawk have to make it stand out?

TC: Greyhawk offers a different experience than NWN. We were trying to make a strong single player storyline that offered multiple ways to play through it. And we were trying for a game that was as true to D&D rules as possible, so that people felt like they were really playing D&D. I think we have succeeded.

22. Finally is there anything you would like to add? Perhaps something I missed?

TC: I would like to thank all of the fans that contributed ideas and suggestions to our team during the development of the game. You helped make the game better, and we appreciate the support.

Pirates and copy-lenders: please, please, please buy this game! I feel like I'm a lone crusader screaming this out most the time (and often times the target of flames) but I can't help being a Troika fan-boy.

This game looks damn good. Arcanum, with its limited budget and publisher's demand for real-time combat, was still an exquisite game. Yet, pirates were already announcing on the IGN Arcanum boards that they had the full copy of the game a month before it came out. The sales were good, but imagine how much more they could have made.

Here's my reasoning why pirates, at least the pirates who love Fallout and Arcanum, should buy this game rather than download it. Lately, RPG's have gone down-wind. The most impressive game that's made a high impact recently is Morrowind, which wasn't something to throw party streamers for. This may seem dire and melodramatic but Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarksy, and Jason Anderson and the rest of Troika Games may be the only hope in our genre. Tim, Leon, and Jason were the elemental forces that made Fallout such an in-depth game. The previews of ToEE gives me the impression that this game will provide me with a lot of playing hours and replayabilty. Troika doesn't seem that bad off (I looked at their job options and benefits and it had me wishing that I could apply) and they've also got an Anne Rice Vampire RPG going on, but the money they make will ultimately be made to provide higher quality in following games.

Other then that, the only thing I can say is I'm looking forward to this game.

I wonder if he did anything w/my suggestion for idiosyncratic characters, for instance a tough-as-nails fighter who scoffs at death, but is arachnophobic. He seemed very excited about it at the time.

Can't wait for this game to come out. Never thought I'd say that about another D&D product, but Timmay & Co. have me drooling. No waiting for the bargain bin, I'm getting it hot off the presses.

Ah yes, the moment (almost) I've been waiting for, this is a game I'm really looking forward to...

I was really happy when I walked into my local Gamespot the other day - no copies of Lionheart to be seen, and 5 TOEE boxes prominently displayed for pre-order. Someone obviously doesn't think turn-based is dead.

Only 3 weeks to go!!!

Cool, I'm very excited, I must say. However, if this game turns out to be as crappy and amateurish as Arcanum, I'll be very disappointed.

Oh yeah!

Any product-specific information available? Sys reqs would be nice since my system is quite dated and by the screenshots I saw (SUCK IT NWN)it looked like it would require a heavy duty computer. How about release dates? Tim is the only hope I have left for quality rpging.

Our min spec is a 700 Mhz processor, with 128 Meg of RAM and a 2nd generation 3D video card, running DirectX 8.1. We don't have a recommend spec yet, but the two biggest factors that improve performance are video cards with high fill rates and CPU's with lots of on-chip cache.

That quote was found atGame Banshee.

Damn, I only havea 633 mhz processor...

Did I mention how excited I was? As soon as I pass (fail?) Mathematical Analysis II, I'm calling my pir...ehrm, my low-quantity CD distributor and ordering that game! Go, D&D! In the meantime, I'll downlo...ehrm, purchase Baldur's Gate II and finish it.

Atari and Troika Games are pleased to announce that The Temple of Elemental Evil will now ship on September 16th and not September 23rd as previously reported. After years of research into the science of time travel and the mysticism of interactive entertainment distribution, Atari has achieved a breakthrough in the melding of the two disciplines. As a result of this revolutionary achievement, The Temple of Elemental Evil will now appear on retail stores shelves nationwide seven days earlier than originally anticipated.

Not to diss Tim or any of the Troika team but it appears that Atari did a perfect ringer with the game (they ended with a pole in their ass). If you bother and check out the Atari forums they are almost chock full of ugly bug reports at the ToEE section. Wanna know whats worse? Neither Troika nor Atari has even bother to say either fuck you or have patience at the forums (the moderator is either dead or bored). Do you think Atari will get their shit together?

I sure hope so. I haven't run into any bugs at all, but it seems like almost everyone else has and Atari isn't responding at all.

Personally I'd just like a patch that lets you see what magic items do - I understand Troika's reasons for not having in-depth descriptions (in a PnP game you probably wouldn't have everything spelled out for you, and it's kinda nice to have to discover an item's properties), but I'd really like to have the option to have them. Maybe a barter/negotiation system for dividing loot with followers as well.

Anyone here run into any bugs yet?
