Here are some of my ideas for forms of transportation for Fo3. However, to implement these things you would either have to change location of have Fo3 take place after Fo2 and that would mean even more Civilazation. Unless you'd have this really big bad war ravaging through the wastes.

Ok, Here goes.

Car: shouldn't be too hard to build since there are cars just lying around al over the wastes and don't tell me that all those cars are missing the same components.
40 mph on road - 30 mph of road - 800 lbs trunk - 4 NPC's

Coca Cola truck: Perfect for traders or people who are just too emotionally attached to there junk, to build it goes the same argument as for the car.
30 mph on road - 20 mph of road - 6000 lbs cargo - 2 NPC's

Pickup: Speaks for itself, just attach a brahmin cart to a car en voila.
40 mph on road - 35 mph of road - 2000 lbs cargo - 2 NPC's

Dune Buggy: I recently read "Oh, I'm sure there are dozens of surplus dune buggies lying around the wastes", to the one who said this, just take a cars engine, some metal pipes and wheels and presto. Attach a Bozar at the back in case of raider encounters and it's complete.
50 mph on road - 50 mph of road - 200 lbs cargo - 2 NPC's

Dirtbike/Motorcycle: This one may be more difficult.
50 mph on road - 40 mph of road - 0 lbs trunk - 1 NPC

Bus: Like some of those busses you see driving around 3th world countries, mostly made out of junk like metal and wooden plates just nailed together.
30 mph on road - 20 mph of road - 2000 lbs cargo - 10 NPC's

And then there is the matter of Public transport, like, lets say a working train on a railroad between 3 mayor cities, like New Arroyo, New Reno and the New California Republic (a lot of new towns, I wonder weither there is a New Tuil) If Fo3 would actually be a SEquel to Fo2 you would also already have roads (trails) between town. Problem is however that the Wastes would be to civilized and that would take the Fallout feeling away. (Solve it with a war between NCR and USA (United States of Arroyo)) If it's before Fo2 you'll have to move the map or people will start asking for expanations on where the Busses and Railroads where in Fo2.

Maybe you could use your vehicles as bunkers (having your NPC's fire form within the Bus), perhaps even while your driving (You encounter: some wacko raiders in Desert Buggies with Light Support Weapons)

This was supposed to be much longer but I'm getting tired and... Oh, one more thing, totally of topic, never mind.

It takes more than slapping some pieces together to get an engine to work. Even in FO1 the vehicles had 80 years of weather to completely destroy them. I can't imagine you finding refined oil in the wasteland, not to mention alot of other items required to get a car running.

Hmmm

The Highwayman didn't run on any fossil fuel, but on electricity (I assume) generated by the Micro Fusion Cells and Small Energy Cells.

The massive availability of the above energy cells in FO2 is a different story, though. (Never played FO1, so can't say anything about it.)

I do agree with your point, though. Animal traction would be more realistic. I find horses (single or double-headed), giant lizards (Gecko riders?) even big radscorpions more believable in the Fallout world than cars, trucks, APCs and tanks.

Hey I'd be a car thief. And if a whale can drop out of the sky, I'm sure a Dodge Charger could as well. I'd be lookin good. It'd be like caravans, but you have to transport vehicles instead. Maybe I have been watching too much Gone In Sixty Seconds.

I wasn't referring to gas to power it. I was refering to lubrication for the pistons and such. Otherwise the the friction will cause heat, heat will cause warping...and soon the engine won't run. Friction by itself is going to contribute the warping as well.
Some other fuilds that are a bit important. Brake fuild (doesn't do any good for the car not to stop), transmission fluid, steering fuild (although you could do without this one)...
The idea of finding a working car...or building one is damn near impossible.

Oops, sorry. My bad. I *assumed* you were talking about fuel.
Actually lubricants could be a minor problem in the game setting. Fire Gecko oil should be resistant to high temperatures :-)
Graphite, an excellent lubricant, is found in it's free state in nature.

Brake fluid is essential only to hydraulic braking systems. Mechanical systems may be used instead (but are a lot less effective).

In any case, I think ingenuity could make up for the lost tech edge. This said, I really don't think *any* vehicle would be operational after a couple of centuries of weather affecting it. *Maybe* you could find a vehicle submerged in an oil bath or conserved in grease or something, but this would be very unlikely. The much more believable scenario would be vehicles made from scavenged parts.

Using 19th century tech (coal, steam) with maybe some methane gas obtained from brahmin shit, you could have coal-fired or gas-fired steam-driven generators charge acid-lead batteries with electricity, for use in vehicles and things. Both lead and sulfuric acid are fairly easy to produce.

I do draw the line at uranium mines and nuclear power plants. Those things probably have the same priority on the target list as military installations.

In any case, vehicles should not be completely out but shold be *very* rare and inefficient.

Maybe a tank could be included, it's speed would be horrendously slow, but it's cannon would act like a turret in combat during those random encounters. Probably have a NPC to man it, shooting rockets at bandits/whatever, and seeing them get blown sky high and/or into little bits.

id draw the line at the most fro vehicles. no tanks...thats just too much. this is kinda off the subject but i think we should be able to make our own brhmin or caravan drives, or be traders and all that stuff. i mean go buy abunch of brahmin and hire you're guards and go to another city and sell them.
im all for the nuka cola truck

i want a vertibird. The Enclave could run 'em so so can i. I want a flame cannon and a pulse cannon and protection to nearly everything. Maybe if you visit the remains of Navaro some gang has found it and calls it its own. They could have found some prizes there and become real high tech. Not as a main enemy sort of people just if you kill em you get a solar powered Vertibird. (there's your source of fuel. It should be plentiful).
