Trouble entering NCR - solution NOT in stickies or search

Shard McKrick

First time out of the vault
I'm getting the black screen crash when I try to enter NCR. I've tried the suggestions in the stickies - no dice.

I'm not asking for anyone to give me more troubleshooting help - but I'm thinking about another possibility that I didn't see anywhere in the stickies or by searching.NO ASKING FOR FILES!

Once again, I've tried the manual install, I've tried switching off the video card, and I've tried the other stuff - it's pretty obvious that the problem is with NCR and not the whole game.

If I have to get a new copy of the game disk, so be it, but I'd like to try all of my options before spending more money on something I already have.

Thanks in advance.

Addendum: If you're going to post here to tell me to read the stickies or learn to use the search function: fuck off, I've already tried the stickies' advice, and I've already searched for the issue and found nothing helpful, so you're just beating a dead horse.

1) No asking for game files, that falls under warez.

2) Giving attitude before anything has happened is a really, really stupid thing to do. So don't do it again.

3) If there are NCR .sav files in your saved game folder, try replacing those with the renamed .map files

Maybe we should re-sticky Montez post saying "Read the stickies or be vatted".

1) No asking for game files, that falls under warez.

Nowhere in the stickies in this forum - and besides, warez? I understand that there might be liability issues for the site if people start giving out game files, but anyone who compiles an entire 600MB+ game 1 MB at a time probably deserves to play his patchwork creation, if only for the sheer gall and determination it would take to do such a thing.

2) Giving attitude before anything has happened is a really, really stupid thing to do. So don't do it again.

Yes, yes, I know, and I debated it with myself before posting with that addendum, but consider my attitude a reaction for the other people you've (collectively) been assholes to. See http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33398 for an example.

Besides, the worst that can happen as a result of aggravating the high-and-mighties of this forum is that I get banned from it, and if I'm banned, you clearly weren't going to help me anyway, so big fucking deal.

3) If there are NCR .sav files in your saved game folder, try replacing those with the renamed .map files

If I had been able to enter NCR and generate those NCR.sav files, I would clearly have the ability to procure the uncorrupted map files (or whatever other files were causing my problems) without asking anyone for their copies.

Indignance aside, however, I truly do appreciate the fact that your post was actually somewhat oriented toward being helpful instead of being a simple flame. Unfortunately, I'm currently still at square one, except that I now know that I can't even test my theory (that the problem is in the map files and not the master file or elsewhere) unless I find some other ways of procuring clean NCR.map files (or unless some rogue board member just ships them to my email).

So there you go, there's a cross and there are some nails, you can go ahead and crucify me for talking (or writing) straight, or you can try to help me get the damn game working, or you can just go ahead and ignore me. Your ball.

It's part of a copyrighted production, and *our host* doesn't allow us to do anything like that around here. You can disagree with it all you want, it's not going to change anything.
Aside from that, it's not like a new Fallout game would cost that much.

Hah, that guy didn't read the stickies or ignored them. He never tried disabling the card (or if he did, he let us know *after* his original post), toying with video acceleration, disabling AGP fast writes or Write Combining, disabling visual themes or any of the other solutions offered in the stickies. If he did try them, there was no way for us to know that.

And yes, we would always help you, if you *keep to what's noted in the stickies*. We have them for a reason.
This may very well change by premature bitching, though.

Have you tried manually copying all the files from the CD? Because that's really the only thing I can think of. It almost has to be damaged data, so a straight copy from the disc could work.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, the .map files come from the Master.dat file.

Otherwise, you could perhaps try to get it to work with FIFE.

I'd recommend just downloading a really simple mod. That way you can get a slew of files and test whatever you need to. I'd recommend killap's work, as it is primarily a bug fix patch/mod and I am certain the NCR files are in there.

This PM helped me to notice something that might help troubleshoot the problem. I was already using killap's patch (since the first time I opened up the game), so I already had his map files in my data folder. I thought that if his maps were the ones being used, the problem must lie in his map, so I should just pull the maps off of my disc to try to fix the problem.

But then I realized:

1) That there are no unpacked maps on the disc itself - are they packed in master.dat or is my disc seriously screwed up? Edit - answered in above post while I was typing this one.

2) That there is no NCR2.map (but NCR1, NCR3, and NCR4) in my maps folder, nor in killap's patch. If my disc is busted, and I'm only running maps from the patch, could that mean that I'm missing NCR2.map, and just need it to get NCR working correctly?

Anyway, that's just a slight update and some guesses about what the problem might be, thanks to MIB88 for the assistance and helping me catch this stuff, whether it's useful info or just pointless crap. If you have any help to offer with this, feel free to chime in.[/b]

Now you deserve to get slapped around. Heavily.
Any mods installed means you post in the modding forum as detailed in the stickies you supposedly read and the forum description.

They are always packed in master.dat This means that .map file came from, gee, *the unofficial patch*, which is why you should've posted there.

No, because NCR2.map should still just be in the Master.dat

For someone bitching at us prematurely because you've supposedly read the stickies, you did very little reading.

How about you try it *without* any mods installed?

Hoo boy is my face red!

Anyway, in case anyone cares here in the purist's forum - killap's ncrent.map (First NCR map, outside of the city) is corrupted in release A (and probably B as well). Problem resolved.

Oh, and to my credit, the stickie's don't say a damn thing about unofficially patched FO/FO2 games (not that I've checked very closely in the last five minutes).

5. Here is a simple test to see where you should post about a possible bug/game glitch or a problem with a mod. If you experience the problem without a mod installed, it goes onto this forum. If the problem only occurs when you have a mod installed, post about it on the modding forum with what mod, version, what else you might be doing with the game at the same time, and generally anything else that would make it a specific issue for a mod in question. In the same spirit, game glitches that arise only when you've hacked a save game should be posted upon the modding forum as well.
5. To further clarify if you should instead post on the modding forum - basically, this forum is for the core part of the game using the official patches. If you've messed with that state, post about it on the modding forum. That includes if you're using any unofficial patches.
6. This forum is for tech support and game help for the basic game with official patches ONLY.

I'd say, hard to miss rules number 5a, 5b, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

They're practically identical.

If you even so much as SCAN the stickies, you'd notice that.

Cut it out, people. This is not a thread to scold Shard.

Actually, they can keep it up if they want to really - I made a pretty blatant faux pas (actually a couple), and they can criticize all they want.

I'm not too uptight to laugh at myself. It's actually pretty refreshing, helps keep things in perspective.

I actually did scan the stickies not too long before posting, and I did completely miss those rules, partially because I had looked over them a few times already, but never bothered to think about what they actually meant. And besides, my problem certainly could have had nothing to do with the patch .
