trouble refueling car

First time out of the vault
Hey, I don't seem to be able to refuel the car. This is my first time playing the game and it's my understanding that your target the car with micro fusion cells in order to refuel it. But... I can't figure out how to do it. I stick the 50x cell in my quickslot, then click on it in the main screen with the understanding that a targeting curser should appear. Unfortunately no cursor shows up...

Am I just trying to refuel the car wrong or is this a bug? I'm running win xp and the US version 1.02. The thing ran out of gas in the desert between vault city and broken hills.

My only other saved game is really far back so I'd appreciate any help in solving this issue!
 
Well, whenever I did it, i just get the fuel in my inventory. Click on the car and hold down, and that little menu type thing should appear. Drag the mouse down to the backpack icon, and release the mouse button. Then, a little inventory window should pop up. Just click on the fuel cells. That should work.
